LAHORE: Police claimed on Monday to have arrested a rape suspect who assaulted his three-year-old cousin in Green Town a few days ago.

Police also claimed busting a robbers’ gang involved in looting 27 citizens in a single day on the eve of a cricket match between Pakistan and India this year.

Crimes Investigation Agency SP Umer Virk told a news conference that the suspect had picked the girl who was asleep along with her brothers and sisters outside their house a few days back.

In the morning, the victim was spotted unconscious at Chand Mari Ground. After the family protested against the incident, police began investigation by involving relatives, friends and people from the neighbourhood and took a teenager, a nephew of victim’s father, into custody for questioning.

The SP said the suspect confessed to committing the offence.

Meanwhile, SP Umer Virk said the Kotwali CIA police arrested Imran alias Mani and his nine accomplices involved in looting 27 citizens who had come on roads to celebrate a win of the Pakistan cricket team against India.

He said the police seized cash, laptops, mobile phones, motorcycles, watches worth Rs3 million and illegal weapons from them.

The SP said the suspects had confessed to committing 66 incidents of robbery in several police stations of the city.

NH&MP ACTION: The National Highways & Motorways Police central zone continued action against public sector vehicles overcharging from passengers ahead of Eidul Fitr on the third consecutive day on Monday, seizing Rs333,385 over-charged amount and imposing Rs1.69 million fine on 223 buses.

According to a news release, the central zone (Lahore to Rahim Yar Khan) made transport owners to pay back Rs333,385 overcharged amount to 1,882 passengers.

The central zone initiated stern action on the complaints of overcharging on the directive of NH&MP IG Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema. Central Zone DIG Bashir Ahmed Memon also made a surprise checking of overcharging in buses on Monday.
