LAHORE: Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) finalised on Sunday a two-phase plan to ensure a clean environment for the residents of the Punjab metropolis during Eid days.

In the first phase, special cleanliness measures would be taken in commercial markets and public places, said a spokesperson. By the night before Eidul Fitr, heaps of waste in all forms, especially construction and demolition material lying on major roads, would be removed. All major mosques and places dedicated for Eid prayers would be cleaned and washed while lime would be applied on all paths and pavements leading to the places of worship.

In the second phase, additional waste containers would be put at places frequented by Lahorites during Eid holidays. Public awareness campaigns would be launched at Lahore Zoo and Jilani (Race Course) Park on the second and third day of Eid, respectively, to sensitise citizens to the sanitation.

All operational activities would be recorded and monitored through Android mobiles and pictures would be made available on LWMC web portal.

Keeping in view the rain forecast of meteorological department, some 1,000 workers had been dedicated along with equipment to cater to the situation at city’s 120 or so major choking points in case of excessive rainfall.

A control room had also been established to monitor and ensure the field arrangements according to the plan.

LWMC Managing Director Khalid Majeed and other senior officers would pay surprise visits to check the field operations performance, said the spokesperson.
