First World Cup

July 13, 1930

ON this day, the first ever football World Cup was held in Uruguay. Two games were held on this day, with France beating Mexico 4-1, and the USA defeating Belgium 3-0.

The inaugural FIFA World Cup was held from July 13 to July 30, 1930. All matches were played in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo, with majority of them held at the Estadio Centenario, a stadium specially built for the tournament.


A new technology is named ‘MP3’

July 14, 1995

THIS day, an infant technology that later changed the whole music world is christened as ‘.mp3’ file extension. Formally known as ‘MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3,’ this technology was efficient enough in encoding the high-quality digital audio using a highly efficient data-compression algorithm.

In other words, it was a way to make CD-quality music files small enough to be stored in bulk on the average computer and transferred across the internet.


Disneyland opens

July 17, 1955

ON n this day, Disneyland Park, originally Disneyland, is the first of two theme parks built at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, opens.

In the early 1950s, Walt Disney began designing a huge amusement park to be built near Los Angeles. He intended Disneyland to have educational as well as amusement value and to entertain adults and their children.

It is the only theme park designed and built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney. Disneyland hosts more than 14 million visitors a year, who spend close to $3 billion.
