LAHORE: With the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) considering a plan to revamp its decades-old domestic system which includes eliminating departmental teams, it may lead to hundreds of cricketers being rendered unemployed.

There are reports that the PCB has briefed its constitution committee about the revamp plan according to which one department will support one region instead of fielding its own team in domestic cricket.

That would result in the players, who receive their monthly salaries from ten such departments, will lose their jobs and it has been learnt that they might come out to streets to protest for their rights as presently they are waiting to find out the PCB’s seriousness in the revamp plan.

While the move will reduce the expenditure of the PCB and the departments, the players would be the suffering party and have said no such decision is acceptable to them unless their futures are guaranteed to be safe.

Interestingly, instead of making the regions independent, the revamp plan makes them dependable on both the PCB and the respective department.

At present, only the PCB bears the expenses of the regions but according to the revamp plan, the region will also be financed by the department thus giving it two begging bowls.

“Currently every department has at least 20 to 25 cricketers on its payroll, who will be axed as they will also be forced to play their domestic cricket for the region,” a cricketer said.

“In that case, there will hardly be any place left for the youngsters to play for their regions as most of the departmental cricketers are either Test or international players and have a better chance for the selection.”
