GUJRANWALA: The chief minister has ordered an inquiry into the incident that Sadar Assistant Commissioner (AC) Akbar Bhinder and PML-N MPA Nawaz Chohan danced with an actress at the inauguration of the Punjab festival and cultural show in Gujranwala on Saturday.

Dawn learnt that a television channel aired a footage of dance which prompted the chief minister to order an inquiry. District Coordination Officer (DCO) Azmat Mahmood has been appointed inquiry officer. Officials said the DCO had got and examined the footage.

In a related incident, Gujranwala Commissioner Shamail Ahmad Khwaja issued a notice to Arts Council Director Abdul Aleem Khan and ordered an inquiry into allegations that the Sadar AC was fanning obscenity in the festival and cultural show.

The commissioner took action on a plea by Jamaat-i-Islami’s Hameedud Din Awan, Sunni Tehrik’s Muhammad Akram Babar and Jamia Qasimia’s Hafiz Gulzar Ahmad who met him at his office.

Also, Additional Inspector General Muhammad Amlish reportedly suspended special branch inspector Amir Hafeez from service and issued a notice to inspectors Tariq Mahmood and Muhammad Shafiq for concealing facts in their report about the dance incident.

DEATH: Anti-Terrorism Court No 2 Judge Muhammad Ittefaq Abbasi handed down on Saturday death sentence on four counts with a Rs500,000 fine to Adnan Arshad in the murder case of two people.

The judge also sentenced him to 20-year imprisonment. He will have to undergo two and a half year hard imprisonment if he defaults on fine.

According to the prosecution, the convict shot dead Pervaiz Iqbal and Mukhtar Ahmad and injured Ishtiaq and constable Zubair over an enmity in the district and sessions court of Gujrat on Aug 25, 2011.

COURT ORDER: A local court ordered on Saturday the medical examination of a woman and sent her to shelter.

Complainant (S) of Chand da Qila said she married Ehsan of Naushera Virkan. At the time of marriage, he claimed that he was single but it turned out later that he was a father of four.

When she demanded divorce, Ehsan tortured and expelled her from the house.

She requested the court to get her medically examined to ascertain the extent of torture on her.

SEALED: Thirteen shops were sealed and the goods of 80 other shops confiscated by City Assistant Commissioner Attiqur Rehman during an operation clean-up in Katchi Fatomand on Saturday.
