PESHAWAR: A man was killed and 10 others, including a woman, were injured in grenade and bomb attacks here on Sunday, and a polio worker was shot dead near the city.

According to police, a man hurled a grenade during a gunfight between two groups in the Sarband area near Bara Qadeem checkpost, killing one Banaras Khan and injuring eight others.

The wounded — Alif Gul, Abdul Karim, Waheed Gul, Yaseen Khan, Kamran Khan, Bilal Khan, Alamgir Khan and Habib Khan — were taken to hospital. Police were deployed in the area to prevent further clashes.

An improvised explosive device went off outside the house of a fruit merchant, Haji Zar Said, in Panj Katha area of Zargarabad. His daughter-in-law Shenogai and a rickshaw driver, Mahir, were injured and the house was damaged.

An official of the Yakatoot police station said a time-bomb weighing about 2kg had been used in the attack.

A source said extortionists had asked the trader for money, but he had turned down the demand.

In the third incident, EPI technician Sajid Naseer was gunned down by unidentified assailants on the premises of his house in Surizai village.

His uncle Zahid Ali lodged an FIR at the Badhber police station without nominating anyone in the case because, he said, they had no enmity with anyone.

But, he said, Naseer had participated in the anti-polio campaign in the area which may have caused his murder.
