KP to provide digital arms licences

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has launched a project to provide digital arms licences to overcome the use of fake licences.

Chief Minister Pervez Khattak inaugurated the project at the home and tribal affairs department here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Khattak expressed the hope that the computerised arms licences would help check corruption and use of fake licences.

“Now the people instead of waiting for months will receive arms’ licences in a few days, while sale and purchase of both arms and cartridges will also be simplified and legalised,” he said.

Similarly, he said the timely identification of the wrongdoers would help in preventing crimes and unlawful activities, beside generating revenue for the government.The chief minister appreciated the provincial IT minister Shahram Khan Tarakai and his department for successful completion of this important project.

Mr Khattak said now a police constable through mobile SMS could check the licence of any person anywhere.

Its good to hear innovative ideas of PTI in KPK. The good thing is that the provincial government is always open to ideas from outside their party. Similarly, KPK police needs to have their own cellular network service, restricted to communicate within their own police department, free to use. Their own sim will enhance their communication capability and even a constable would remain in contact with his force all times. Some phone channels could be hired from already existing private cellular companies. Army's, Special Communication Organisation (SCO) in the northern areas once were using their own sims in the Northern Areas only available to them.

@Khanm: I agree we have enough guns in the country already. We should be removing guns of the street and making them illegal to carry in the first place. In itself would be advancement towards establishing peace in the country and progress toward developement

@edwardian: They do. Previously, two way radios used to only operate on an open channel. Now they can operate on a closed channels in case someone of rank needs to discuss something important. I'm sure we'll be making more use of advancing communication technology in the near future especially once the 4G issue is resolved which hopefully will be soon.

Guns are part of Pushtoon culture and will always be, whether they have a license or not. So why not make it easy. Like the NRA says, "only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun".

@Aftab Hussain: This will help reducing the guns by tightening the screws for illegal permits and guns .... the best approach to handle illegal arms is to formalize and computerize the process
