PESHAWAR: An accountability court on Monday extended for ten days the physical remand of the former inspector general police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Malik Naveed to the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the weapon scam case.

The former provincial IGP Malik Naveed was allegedly involved in a scam regarding misuse of funds for buying cars and weapons.

The NAB had asked for a further remand of 10 days for the accused which was granted by the court.

According to the NAB, Malik Naveed was accused of being involved in embezzlement of 1.8 billion rupees in a weapons buying deal worth seven billion rupees.

Malik Naveed was arrested by the NAB on Nov 20, on charges of receiving kickbacks in the multi-billion rupees procurement of weapons, equipment and vehicles for the provincial police department.

On Nov 21, he was initially remanded for 14 days to the NAB to probe further into the scam and then on December 4, the accountability court extended his remand by 10 days.

Malik’s remand on Dec 14, was extended for the second time, this time the custody consisted of nine days.

Also in September 2012, a colonel and three majors were sacked from military service after it emerged that they had accepted kickbacks while inspecting arms purchased by the KP government for the police in 2010.

The sacked officers are alleged to have accepted Rs11 million from a contractor to give a clean bill of health to weapons, ammunition, bullet-proof jackets and bullet-proof helmets which were then supplied to the KP police department.
