ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Monday submitted a request in the Supreme Court of Pakistan which sought four months time to conduct Local Government elections in the four provinces of Pakistan, DawnNews reported.

In its request, the election commission took the stance that the exercise of delimitation of constituencies was yet to take place and despite the arrangements made by the provinces a four-month period was required to conduct the local government polls.

On Oct 23, the ECP had told the apex court that it could schedule local government elections only after certain prerequisites were satisfied.

The Supreme Court had earlier directed the ECP to follow the schedules presented by the Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan provincial governments to hold local government polls.

A reply filed on behalf of the ECP had listed features like completion of delimitation process, necessary changes in laws and election rules, door-to-door verification by the ECP, preparation of fresh electoral rolls by Nadra and provinces, procurement of election materials by the commission and printing of ballot papers by the Printing Corporation of Pakistan and the Security Printing Corporation.

Furthermore, ECP was of the opinion that these measures would take at least four months to complete.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court sought a written reply from the ECP while hearing the case regarding holding of local government polls.

The apex court is to take up the petition again on Tuesday.
