RIYADH: A Saudi court sentenced a preacher convicted of raping his five-year-old daughter and torturing her to death to eight years in prison and 800 lashes, a lawyer said Tuesday.

In a case that drew widespread public condemnation in the kingdom and abroad, the court also ordered Fayhan al-Ghamdi to pay his ex-wife, the girl's mother, one million riyals ($270,000) in “blood money,” lawyer Turki al-Rasheed told AFP.

Blood money is compensation for the next of kin under Islamic law.

The girl's mother had demanded 10 million riyals ($2.7 million).

Ghamdi's second wife, accused of taking part in the crime, was sentenced to 10 months in prison and 150 lashes, said Rasheed, who is lawyer for the girl's mother.

Ghamdi was convicted of “raping and killing his five-year-old daughter Lama,” he added.

The girl was admitted to hospital on December 25, 2011 with multiple injuries, including a crushed skull, broken ribs and left arm, extensive bruising and burns, activists said. She died several months later.

Ghamdi, a regular guest on Muslim television networks despite not being an authorised cleric in Saudi Arabia, had confessed to having used cables and a cane to inflict the injuries, human rights activists said earlier this year.

Randa al-Kaleeb, a social worker from the hospital where Lama was admitted, said the girl's back was broken and that she had been raped “everywhere”.

Reportedly, Ghamdi had tortured and raped his daughter after he had doubted her virginity.

Rights activists in the kingdom had been campaigning for harsher punishment of Ghamdi when reports emerged in January that the court would only give him a short jail term and order him to pay blood money to the mother.

In ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia, where rape and murder are among several crimes punishable by death, a father cannot be executed for murdering his children, nor can husbands be executed for murdering their wives.

Such crimes carry a jail sentence between five to 12 years.

I have worked in the hellhole called saudi arabia as a physician. I have seen evidence of sexual crimes against minor girls by first degree male relatives all too often. Islam has done nothing to change the real perverse nature of the arab males. they hide all the evil under a curtain of secrecy.

So, a man rapes, tortures and kills his FIVE YEAR OLD daughter because he doubts her virginity and is sentenced to 8 years in prison. Wah, wah, kiya exemplary justice.

Furthermore,

'In Saudi Arabia, where rape and murder are among several crimes punishable by death, a father cannot be executed for murdering his children, nor can husbands be executed for murdering their wives.'

So the Saudi cleric raped his 5 year old daughter because he doubted her virginity.

Evidently the poor girl was raped earlier by some other member of the family. So rather than find out the rapist the cleric proceeded to punish the victim.

Merely 8 years jail punishment was shocking from Saudis because I had impression that Saudis would give big punishment even for small things. Big manipulation of laws or illogical decision. This is completely sickening that a 'father' raped and murdered his own five year old daughter. FIVE. An innocent baby. All because he questioned her virginity? Are you kidding me? What five year old has any inclination as to what sex is? You know what I think? I think this sick man had been raping her for years and didn't want to have to answer to her future husband as to why she wasn't a virgin, so he decided to end her life after having a final 'go' at her.

He deserves to rot in a prison cell for the remainder of his miserable life and to be repeatedly raped himself so he can see exactly what he did to his own flesh and blood.

It's horrible that he only gets a few years as punishment.

However, I guarantee that one of the darkest circles of hell is reserved for people like him. That is the only reason I can sleep tonight, knowing that God will give him what he deserves in the afterlife.

What makes me even more sick is the idea that I'm sure he prayed every day and talked about how great a "Muslim" he was to people...all while he was doing the most depraved things to his own child. SICK SICK SICK.

Does this what Sharia law means? Are Islamic Religious parties fighting for the introduction of this law Pakistan? Is his punishment really according to Islamic Law?

The "Blood Money" system is one of the most horrible, retching tenet of Islam. How do you give only Eight years imprisonment for raping, torturing, burning your own daughter of five over several months when you give death sentences to homosexuals and adulterer women WHO HAVE COMMITTED NO CRIMES AGAINST A FELLOW HUMAN? Any where else in the Non-Muslim world this man goes to jail for life with no chance of parole. SHAME!! SHAME!! SHAME!!

The proper sentence would be to neuter him.

Good decision indeed, he should be given the punishment of death.

Let us start a global fund in the name of the deceased girl, hire someone to locate this rascal in the jail he is put in, and award the proceeds of the funds to the person who plans to do away with this animal.

That will teach a lesson to all Saudis that they can not escape global justice.

Trying to make sense of the justice or lack of, in this case, I would think the punishment should include castration for any male who is convicted if he is also responsible for the livelihood of other family members. Once a rapist/child molester, always a rapist/child molester. Castrate him if he is to return into society.

This animal should have been sent to the gallows, it is a strange law that a father cannot be executed for the murder of his children nor his wife. This is total discrimination. If execution is allowed in the country it should be for everyone who is a murderer.

@saudi: What kind of sharia is this? Father killing his child, husband killing his wife are not given death sentence. This is mockery of justice, whether sharia or not.

@ayesha ahmad: I saw a Sci-Fi movie once, and in the future, those who had committed a crime such as this, their punishment was to be strapped to a table with electrodes on their heads, and in virtual reality THEY became the victim and had to experience exactly what their victim had. Over and over. Too bad we aren't there yet.

Just a question as my knowledge about Islam is from what Muslims do than what they preach Is this really a big crime in Sharia? I thought that a girl going to school is a bigger crime deserving death than this!

"In ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia, where rape and murder are among several crimes punishable by death, a father cannot be executed for murdering his children, nor can husbands be executed for murdering their wives." So in Saudi, a women can be executed for murdering her children or husband, but the man is not executed. Clear sexist country. Not onyl that if it was a non-saudi he would be executed more than once! Laughable they call themselves a muslim country. The Saudi royalty and govt have hijacked Islam claiming they are following islamic laws, but infact they are twisting the laws and distorting it to their advantage.

You cannot use the Saudi preacher example to criticize Shariat. No Muslim can deny Shariat, otherwise, he is denying the Allah SWT's order in the Holy Quran and the Sunnat of the Prophet PBUH. Please read Surat Shoura versus 13 to 17. How Allah SWT has ordered to implement Islamic Sharyat where ever you have a estate otherwise you will be severely punished. This is the joint declaration of whole Muslim Ummat, denial of a single world of the Holy Quran is out of the circle of Islam, mean he/she is no more Muslim. 90% of Pakistanis want Sharia Law.

@jen: This has nohting to do with Sharia. Saudi Arab is NOT the maker of Sharia and if their clerics are doing this, it is Haraam act (not permissible).

If Sharia laws would have been followed, this man would be on death penalty right now. The Holy Quran has made such actions Haraam and clearly outlined the punishment for such actions. Shame on the saudi govt who is protection one of their "own".

O my God, how could it happen or this so called preacher must have lost his mental balance and turned from a sensible human to wild animal and cannibal? Such frequent news are signs that we have already entered the era of dooms day? I wish I been from one of those fortunate people who have already departed from this sinful world before hearing or watching such news.

@Cynic: Women & children are considered "property" of a man. The man is responsible for providing them, so if he abuses them then he will get lesser sentence. Women & children are treated as sub-human in this most racist & pathetic society.

Unfortunately, for its oil, a country which tom-toms itself as a great democracy supports it to the hilt

Is it makes any sense? A father or a husband could not get death penality if he kills his own children and in case of husband his wives? Is it not the same period in the 21st century what Muhammad(PBUH) had been fought against it 14th century ago? In this case a cleric raped his five year old daughter and tortouring her to death. Its beyond my understand... In Saudi Arabia male folk has licenes to kill.

@saeed: But in this case its not a culture to rape own daghter and tortoure her to death and just getting 8 year inprisionment? Its not matter of culture. Its matter of justice in islamic system and Arabics.

@el chor All of you will not be able to understand all this, because it is a real shaeria law while all of you are converted Muslims. Hence, although following your Islam, you are following Hindu culture. Hence, it is seems a big problem. Further However, it is absolutely normal in Original

This man looks like a beast!

Islam was brought in that part of the world because the people in that part of the world needed the most disciplined way of life. We are taught not to hate Arabs and we don't. We are taught to read the Quran in Arabic and we do. I do not know anything about Sharia Law in KSA, but I know and I put my full trust in Allah (swt) that this beast will get far worst than one can imagine, in this world and in the here after, Insha'Allah.

What's worst is that, ok a man can turn into an animal, but what blows my mind off is that his second wife is accused of being a part of this! I hope to believe that this is not true or I pray that I don't have to live any longer in this kind of world anymore -- really REALLY saddening!
