FAISALABAD, Sept 25: In an extreme step, the Government College University administration has got registered a case against its female teachers for ‘ransacking’ the varsity property and on some other charges that seem petty.

The female teachers of different varsity departments, including mathematics, Urdu and physics, had been staging demonstrations outside the university for the last three days to protest sacking of some of their colleagues.

The agitators said the varsity had shown the door to several teachers who had been serving the institution for years instead of renewing their contracts. They also alleged that the teachers were sacked to accommodate some blue-eyed candidates.

On Wednesday, the teachers again protested against the varsity administration demanding Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif take notice of the ‘injustice’ done to them.

This time, Gulberg police registered a case against about 60 people, including five protesting teachers – Shakeela Sham, Tayyaba Nighat, Nasreen Siddique, Razia Sultan and Saima who were nominated.

The teachers have been booked under sections 148, 149, 186 and 290 of the PPC with no arrest so far.

The case was registered on the complaint of Talib Hussain, a shift commander of the GCUF security.

According to the complainant, the accused teachers on Monday gathered outside the gate No 2 of the varsity and staged a protest demonstration.

“They tried to enter the university and misbehaved with the guards and stopped them from performing their duty,” the complainant said.

The protesters also blocked traffic, entrance to the university and continued ‘violent’ protest for more than 4-5 hours, he said, adding they forced their entry into the university and ransacked its property and created problems for the students.

Responding to the case registration, the accused teachers said their agitation was peaceful, denying they caused any damage to the varsity property.
