KOHAT, Sept 16: Three women were shot dead by their relatives in the name of ‘honour’ in the Jawaki tribal area of the frontier region of Kohat on Monday.

The political administration sent a tehsildar to the area to investigate the incident and take into custody the relatives who had killed the women. When tribesmen declined to hand over the accused under the collective responsibility clause of the Frontier Crimes Regulations, the Deputy Administrator of FR Region went to the area and held talks with local people and the tribesmen agreed to hand over the wanted persons.

The accused included Jehangir, the husband of one of the three women, and a man named Nasir. They were handed over to Deputy Administrator Kamran Khattak. They were taken to Kohat and locked up in the office of the deputy administrator.

According to the official report, Jehangir used to harass and thrash his wife Saadia Bibi and despite efforts made by relatives to resolve the issue, the man did not relent.

The report said that Saadia’s aunt Amaan Bibi and cousin Asya Bibi managed to send her to Darul Aman in Swat. But Jehangir went to Swat along with Amaan and Asya and brought his wife back to Jawaki on Sunday evening.

Later, uncles and brothers of the women decided to kill them for having brought ‘dishonour’ to the family. The women were shot dead at about 11pm. Local people reported the matter to the political administration on Monday.

According to local people, Jehangir lived in Karachi with his wife and the other two women. Because of the treatment of her husband, Saadia allegedly eloped with a man from Swat and Jehangir lodged a case in Karachi to know the whereabouts of his wife.

Later, Jehangir came to know that his wife was allegedly living with a man in Swat and that she had been helped by Amaan and Asya. Jehangir went to Swat along with his relatives and brought the woman back to his village.
