PESHAWAR: A roadside bomb attack on Sunday killed Pakistan's two senior military officers and a soldier in the country's troubled northwest, the military said.
The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have accepted responsibility for the attack, which was confirmed by TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid in a statement.
Major General Sanaullah Niazi and Lieutenant Colonel Touseef were visiting troop posts in the Upper Dir district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, along the Afghan border, when their vehicle hit a planted bomb killing them along with a soldier.
“Maj Gen Sanaullah and Lt Col Touseef embraced Shahadat (martyrdom) this morning. They were returning after visiting troops posts on Pak Afghan Border,” the military said in a statement, adding that the incident resulted from an IED planted on the road near the border.
“Sepoy Imran also embraced Shahadat (martyrdom), two soldiers injured in the blast have been evacuated,” it added.
“Pakistan army has made substantial sacrifices to protect the nation against the menace of terrorism and such cowardly acts by terrorists cannot deter the morale of our armed forces,” Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said in a statement.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had announced on Saturday that withdrawal of troops from Malakand division would begin next month and the civil administration would take over control of the area.
The announcement came at a time when the federal government is preparing to launch peace talks with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the light of decisions of an all-party conference.
Separately, two roadside bomb attacks in Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal district bordering Afghanistan, killed two soldiers on Sunday and wounded four others, security officials said.
In the neighbouring district of Bannu, Taliban militants ambushed a convoy of tribal police early Sunday, killing two of them and wounding four others, the officials said.
Pakistan says more than 40,000 people have been killed as a result of bomb and suicide attacks carried out by Taliban and Al-Qaeda-led militants who oppose Islamabad's US alliance.

It is a sad news. However, leaving this war to Army only is not the solution. We need political leadership to take the lead. About time, as advised by KPK government, that Army should pull out as soon as. It's not only loosing soldiers but also the reputation of Pakistan Army which is at stake.

I suppose Upper Dir is not part of North Waziristan. Upper Dir is a district of KPK. The head quarter of North Waziristan is Mirinshah not upper dir. This is not what I can term as a mistake and that too from the most authentic of Pakistan's newspapers. I am a regular reader of Dawn News and I like it since its quite reliable in relative terms. But after reading this particular news I am really really disappointed? how can you commit such a blunder, still i am wondering.

The PM should open his eyes to the ground realities. Issuing a typical statement does not do justice to people who have sacrificed their lives. There are roughly 60 Taliban groups so which group of killers are we talking to first? Comprehension of the situation is beyond some peoples capacity as is the case here, specially in the light of the development that the Army has been asked by the provincial government of KP to withdraw from Swat, Malakand, Bonair areas. I wonder who is going to fill the void? Perhaps a re-screening of 'Terror -2'.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif must learn a lesson that his negotiations only to give ample time to the terrorists to further strengthen them against the state. He should rest assured that these wild creature will never surrender and will continue their designed babaric activities. The ruling janta must take Stern Action against them before the negotiate start. None of the held terrorists set free and convited criminals be executed without further delay. They do not desrve any concession.

This media hits the news of army men but this media never gave attention when i sent a written report and request to PML N office. This Geo Tv people never gave attention to my problem when i made the calls to their head offices. Now i have no tender words and sympathies with so called martyrdoms. One day i am in doubt that i will need help from TTP rather than our protectors,police and ministers.This is my furious warning.
Population is soldier who is fighting with peaceless state of law and order,criminals,hunger,jobless state,the very negative attitude of ministers,careless gov't,corrupt politicians,cost rising and so on and on. There is no single common person in pakistan who is less than a soldier. Fighting on border is not difficult,fighting with present state is more valueable. Who says army men are dying? It is very sad indeed that at a time when the Federal Government is making every effort to initiate peace talks with the Talibans and the KPP Government has ordered withdrawal of troops from the Malakand division the Talibans are responding with such measures. By doing so, they will lose the sympathy and support of those few Pakistanis who still hold a soft corner for the Talibans and if such incidents continue then there is just one option left for the government......EXTERMINATE them with all the resources at its disposal!
The root of this problem is the association of Pakistan's military with Washington. They receive Military aid and are the stooge of America. Will these casualties engineer a re-thinking on the part of Pakistan Army. Shouldn't they say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH" and refuse American military aid and withdraw from American war on terror?

@Shaikh Mohommd: I support views expressed by you and add one point that whenever Pakistan decide to hold dialogues with TTP, USA sabotage arrangements by sending drones and as a result disgruntled Taliban revenge by attacking Pak Army which is highly deplorable. Instead Pakistan Govt should declare withdrawl from the war on terror and stop supporting withdrawl of military equipment passing through Pakistan for which US will never give funds to repair damaged infrastructure.

I personally abhor the TTP. They are neither Muslims nor Humans. Each one of them should be hanged on a pole in every chowk of Pakistan. The present government has surrendered itself to Taliban along with other political parties. Now Taliban are emboldened and will kill everyone who comes in their way. The future of Pakistan under present government is totally dark and unless something comes up unexpectedly like a military coup (which is not likely as Army's morale is in low gears). Pakistan is doomed to be a failed and broken state soon than expected.

Failure of the PK government (aka Imran Khan). Pakistan public is so divided on this issue and so is the government of Pakistan, So many political parties and no party has the mandate from to public to act with iron rod. Until the majority of Pakistanis stand up and unite against the government and demand an action, nothing is going to happen. It is the majority of Pakistan public that need to unite and demand what is good for the nation. If politician don't deliver they have right to throw them out. Army need to declare full out war at this front. Can't fight half heartedly. The nation need to wake up and take a stand behind our forces. We can't give up, or soon Pakistan will like Afghanistan. It is time to reconsider the option of negotiations with Taliban. They are nothing less than animals with whom negotiations will be a meaningless exercise. Disregarding other limitations, we should consider option of securing eastern borders with our strategic weapons and spare full military might to crush Talibans and their affiliates once for all.

As I always said, there is no point of having any form of dialogue session or a peace talk with criminals and terrorists... they don't deserve sympathy nor they deserve any place in our society... I know its a hard decision for our Government but it is essential for the existence of Pakistan, for the betterment of our people and for the growth & development of our country that the government, military and judiciary treat all these criminals and terrorists with iron fist....

The use of strategy in the reverse order is the main problem. If we have chosen the dialogue as the first step at the very start, realizing the seriousness of the situation, and have gone towards more aggressive measures if the talks have failed then it would have been much more fruitful. Right now things have gone super complex.
I think we should follow these steps: 1. Powerful negation of TTP ideology from Qur'an and Sunnah and its widest propagation so that masses in general know that there is no support of their actions in there. Silent support is their main source of power. Unless this is done nothing else will work.
Extensive work has been done in Pakistan, sufficient to refute vehemently their ideology from the very sources they relate to.
Other simultaneous measures include: 2. Suffocating their ammunition supply line. 3. Thwart as many of their bombing and killing attempts as possible through intensive intelligence. 4. Apprehending as many as possible and punishing them one by one. 5. All this will bring them to table as their last way to survive. 6. Social uplift of the area, gradually, in a manner not too radical to local population (3 decade problem cannot be solved in months) 7. Army action in an year's time if no sign of improvement in situation after whole-hearted multidimensional concerted efforts.

It happened bcoz it was Allah's desire, why to mourn then? We are killing non-muslims in His name. Sometime, He Himself wants change or else our days are numbered as we muslim have butchered innumerable non muslims since centuries and have accumulated sins. Allah is great.
