PESHAWAR: A roadside bomb attack on Sunday killed Pakistan's two senior military officers and a soldier in the country's troubled northwest, the military said.

The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have accepted responsibility for the attack, which was confirmed by TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid in a statement.

Major General Sanaullah Niazi and Lieutenant Colonel Touseef were visiting troop posts in the Upper Dir district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, along the Afghan border, when their vehicle hit a planted bomb killing them along with a soldier.

“Maj Gen Sanaullah and Lt Col Touseef embraced Shahadat (martyrdom) this morning. They were returning after visiting troops posts on Pak Afghan Border,” the military said in a statement, adding that the incident resulted from an IED planted on the road near the border.

“Sepoy Imran also embraced Shahadat (martyrdom), two soldiers injured in the blast have been evacuated,” it added.

“Pakistan army has made substantial sacrifices to protect the nation against the menace of terrorism and such cowardly acts by terrorists cannot deter the morale of our armed forces,” Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said in a statement.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had announced on Saturday that withdrawal of troops from Malakand division would begin next month and the civil administration would take over control of the area.

The announcement came at a time when the federal government is preparing to launch peace talks with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the light of decisions of an all-party conference.

Separately, two roadside bomb attacks in Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal district bordering Afghanistan, killed two soldiers on Sunday and wounded four others, security officials said.

In the neighbouring district of Bannu, Taliban militants ambushed a convoy of tribal police early Sunday, killing two of them and wounding four others, the officials said.

Pakistan says more than 40,000 people have been killed as a result of bomb and suicide attacks carried out by Taliban and Al-Qaeda-led militants who oppose Islamabad's US alliance.

It is a sad news. However, leaving this war to Army only is not the solution. We need political leadership to take the lead. About time, as advised by KPK government, that Army should pull out as soon as. It's not only loosing soldiers but also the reputation of Pakistan Army which is at stake.

APC has blood on their hands...shame on abject surrender!

September 15, 2013 3:27 pm

I suppose Upper Dir is not part of North Waziristan. Upper Dir is a district of KPK. The head quarter of North Waziristan is Mirinshah not upper dir. This is not what I can term as a mistake and that too from the most authentic of Pakistan's newspapers. I am a regular reader of Dawn News and I like it since its quite reliable in relative terms. But after reading this particular news I am really really disappointed? how can you commit such a blunder, still i am wondering.

No, please, but let's speak to these wonderful Taliban. After all, the APC, which is only second to God, if at all, has decided that we must. I'm sure the Taliban thought well.

If we speak to them after this, it will be worse than the 1971 Instrument.

The PM should open his eyes to the ground realities. Issuing a typical statement does not do justice to people who have sacrificed their lives. There are roughly 60 Taliban groups so which group of killers are we talking to first? Comprehension of the situation is beyond some peoples capacity as is the case here, specially in the light of the development that the Army has been asked by the provincial government of KP to withdraw from Swat, Malakand, Bonair areas. I wonder who is going to fill the void? Perhaps a re-screening of 'Terror -2'.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif must learn a lesson that his negotiations only to give ample time to the terrorists to further strengthen them against the state. He should rest assured that these wild creature will never surrender and will continue their designed babaric activities. The ruling janta must take Stern Action against them before the negotiate start. None of the held terrorists set free and convited criminals be executed without further delay. They do not desrve any concession.

I believe that all the people (military/civilian) who have given their lives for our nation should be honored. We should seriously think about the future of this nation if we want to be considered as a respectable country that can compare with any other nation in the world. We have to bring CHANGE and INSHALLAH we will bring CHANGE.

There is no single common person in pakistan who is less than a soldier. Fighting on border is not difficult, fighting with present state is more valueable. Who says army men are dying? I say that me and thousand others like me are dying in real way. Who publish this?Who ask us what we are suffering?Who have interest what we know? They damn care, and i also damn care about them.

It is very sad indeed that at a time when the Federal Government is making every effort to initiate peace talks with the Talibans and the KPP Government has ordered withdrawal of troops from the Malakand division the Talibans are responding with such measures. By doing so, they will lose the sympathy and support of those few Pakistanis who still hold a soft corner for the Talibans and if such incidents continue then there is just one option left for the government......EXTERMINATE them with all the resources at its disposal!

Shaikh Mohommd
September 15, 2013 5:46 pm

The root of this problem is the association of Pakistan's military with Washington. They receive Military aid and are the stooge of America. Will these casualties engineer a re-thinking on the part of Pakistan Army. Shouldn't they say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH" and refuse American military aid and withdraw from American war on terror?

Our intellegence agencies have to do a better job of locating the leaders of TTP. How can the TTP spokesman contact the newspapers and we cannot locate and kill him

Syed Amanatullah

@Shaikh Mohommd: I support views expressed by you and add one point that whenever Pakistan decide to hold dialogues with TTP, USA sabotage arrangements by sending drones and as a result disgruntled Taliban revenge by attacking Pak Army which is highly deplorable. Instead Pakistan Govt should declare withdrawl from the war on terror and stop supporting withdrawl of military equipment passing through Pakistan for which US will never give funds to repair damaged infrastructure.

September 15, 2013 6:11 pm

Pakistan army seems totally helpless now. A Major General killed by Taliban and nothing will happen. Gov't wants Peace talks with them while they keep on striking whenever and wherever they want. I have a better idea; hand over the power to them.....

September 15, 2013 6:19 pm

I personally abhor the TTP. They are neither Muslims nor Humans. Each one of them should be hanged on a pole in every chowk of Pakistan. But even those of us who are confused and still want to talk to these evil people, we must all gather and honour the supreme sacrifice of these gallant soldiers. Theirs is not to reason why - theirs is but to do and die. May Allah swt bless them and from their sacrifices may the nation prosper and become peaceful. Taliban are terrorists & we all know it. They should be punished, exterminated or if caught face the criminal justice system.

The orders in our Quran are clear: Al Quran 5: 33 "The recompense of those who wage war against.. do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified". Though this was revealed to our holy Prophet Mohammed (SAW) the principle applies to terrorists.

No one has any authority to go against these clear orders.

Forget negotiations. Do what nations do to terrorists - finish them & put those who are caught on trial. Don't hesitate in following the law.

Please act now before Pakistan becomes another Syria.

@Amjad Iqbal: I hope that on that day, u face a needy situation nd try to find army or others for help and they refuse, because that's what u deserve... Sitting behind a desk typing opinions over the keyboard is easy, putting your ass on line isnt! May you find adversaries...

September 16, 2013 12:41 am

@Amjad Iqbal: Your writing speak loud and clear about your mental health. Sadly, you prefer to stand with those who are killing not only our army men but also never show mercy to innocent pakistanis including young girls who just like to have basic education. And they are killing muslim in the name of Islam, shame on TTP.

September 16, 2013 12:56 am

@asif: I fully agree with your comment but when you say Inshallah then you are implying that allah will take care of it. I have seen this mentioned in time and time again in trade, agreements, by politicians and in many other situations when in reality they don't mean it. Allah has given us brain to accomplish what goals we set to achieve. We should help our selves.

It is time to reconsider the option of negotiations with Taliban. They are nothing less than animals with whom negotiations will be a meaningless exercise. Disregarding other limitations, we should consider option of securing eastern borders with our strategic weapons and spare full military might to crush Talibans and their affiliates once for all.

Taliban and their affiliates are the criminals fighting for monetary and other material gains as well for power. Their brand of Islam is not acceptable to 200 million Pakistanies nor they can impose their will forcefully. They are living in fools paradise and must be sorted out once for all.

@Shaikh Mohommd: typical reply from a blind guy. Everything is America's fault. Own up to your problems Pakistan.

KILL every Taliban without prejudice. These no-good murderers are and will destroy the country. They are 100 times worse than the Russians who occupied their Afghanistan. These talibans are nothing more than a bunch of cold-blooded killers. They should be terminated as soon as possible, before this disease spreads to the neighboring countries.

Enough is enough. Several agreements in the past with Talaban were not complied. It is high time army, navy and airforce should join together and eliminate Talaban once for all without any mercy. They are not muslims. They are the ruthless butchers killing innocent people and destroying Pakistan

All those screaming now, do you guys understand the language of terror that you fomented in your neighbouring country with help of these animals. You fed a snake to bit your neighbour and it is biting you now. Enjoy the experience!

I salute the Pakistani Army for their calmness over the issue. But being a student I wonder and I ask myself a question “Why are we having a peace talk with those who are indeed paid (by are enemy) to destroy us. We are asking them not to kill us, take whatever you want, or do whatever you like and we are ready to be your slave forever…….Is this the idea of such peace talk”

As I always said, there is no point of having any form of dialogue session or a peace talk with criminals and terrorists... they don't deserve sympathy nor they deserve any place in our society... I know its a hard decision for our Government but it is essential for the existence of Pakistan, for the betterment of our people and for the growth & development of our country that the government, military and judiciary treat all these criminals and terrorists with iron fist....

September 16, 2013 1:13 pm

@Shaikh Mohommd: If the Pakistani Army stops supporting the war on terror, these terrorists will get stronger. Already they are giving you a bloody nose. What makes you think that they will go back to their caves after that. You can only imagine the consequences of trusting these beasts.

@Agha Ata: Tahreek-e-Terrorist Pakistan?

@Uday Singh: Dont worry Uday the chickens will not rest untill they have batbecued you too.

Give NEGOTIATION many chances, The Pakistanis are suffering becoz of the war in Afghanistan. Both American & Indian should stop poking their Nose. Let wisdom prevail. Nobody is born Terrorist. AHMED

@Raheel Khan: We know the source of their funding. Its coming from out Arab friends! Do we dare stopping out "Arab friends"? we are too busy blaming India, US and Israel but we do not see the glaring fact.

@David: Blasting the bomb and then hiding. Why not come to the front if they are so brave.

The use of strategy in the reverse order is the main problem. If we have chosen the dialogue as the first step at the very start, realizing the seriousness of the situation, and have gone towards more aggressive measures if the talks have failed then it would have been much more fruitful. Right now things have gone super complex.

I think we should follow these steps: 1. Powerful negation of TTP ideology from Qur'an and Sunnah and its widest propagation so that masses in general know that there is no support of their actions in there. Silent support is their main source of power. Unless this is done nothing else will work.

Extensive work has been done in Pakistan, sufficient to refute vehemently their ideology from the very sources they relate to.

Other simultaneous measures include: 2. Suffocating their ammunition supply line. 3. Thwart as many of their bombing and killing attempts as possible through intensive intelligence. 4. Apprehending as many as possible and punishing them one by one. 5. All this will bring them to table as their last way to survive. 6. Social uplift of the area, gradually, in a manner not too radical to local population (3 decade problem cannot be solved in months) 7. Army action in an year's time if no sign of improvement in situation after whole-hearted multidimensional concerted efforts.

It happened bcoz it was Allah's desire, why to mourn then? We are killing non-muslims in His name. Sometime, He Himself wants change or else our days are numbered as we muslim have butchered innumerable non muslims since centuries and have accumulated sins. Allah is great.

September 17, 2013 4:17 pm

@thulluka kolli: You are talking totally opposite. These animals are cleverly fomented by our neighboring country onto our soil and they are being taken very good care of and fed with all what they want by their masters. And you know what..., your people are doing a great job for you!

September 18, 2013 12:51 am

@K.A.Muhammad: After pre-partition, no new sect among muslims in subcontinent developed... it all developed long time ago before partition... in British rule. Post-partition is all indian aggression to finish Pakistan and have succeeded in the form of bangladesh...endian struggle to finish Pakistan is still continue. Pakistan was created for a right and straight islamic purpose, and it will inshAllah come back to the right path soon. Please don't spread ur wrong judgement.
