LAHORE, Sept 5: Punjab government on Thursday undertook before the Lahore High Court that no coercive measures would be taken for the recovery of luxury tax till next hearing of hundreds of petitions against the levy.

While giving the undertaking, acting Punjab Advocate General Mustafa Ramday, however, requested the court to not to pass any written order in this regard.

The court adjourned the hearing till Sept 10 and asked the law officer to explain as to why the luxury tax was imposed in selected areas.

Petitioners had submitted that the levy of the luxury tax in selective areas amounted to discrimination. They said the tax was inconsistent with fundamental rights as guaranteed by the Constitution.

They pointed out that the government did not levy the impugned tax in many posh areas of the city, including Cantonment and DHA, which is a clear discrimination.

The petitioners prayed to the court to set aside the notices issued to them by the excise department.
