KARACHI, Aug 21: A shot in the dying moments by Tahir helped District South Whites beat district East Whites by the barest margin 52-51 and post their second successive victory in Group ‘A’ of the seventh National Bank of Pakistan Cup basketball tournament at the Arambagh floodlit court on Tuesday evening.
The match was fought on even note as the two teams were locked 28-28 at half time. However, when the match reached its climax with losers having a slender lead, district South Whites got two free shots in the D and during a melee Tahir took possession of ball and scored the winning shot.
This infuriated the losers and some of their players used foul language against the referee Asif Mahmood. Ghulam Rasool and Raza Agha were the two other referees.
Taking note of the written complaint of referees, the tournament committee suspended one of the players of losing outfit Hammad from taking part in the rest of the event.
Syed Adnan Ali top scored for the winners with 18 and was followed by Abdullah Imam (9). Shabbar, Hammad and Ali scored nine points apiece for the losers.
In other matches, district Central Greens got the better of district Central Whites 45-28, district South Greens was home 50-33 against district Malir Greens while district West routed Mirpurkhas 31-21. —Sports Correspondent
