LAHORE: Chief of the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) Imran Khan has reportedly alleged rigging in the election after accepting defeat while also indicating that the party would sit in the opposition benches of the National Assembly.

Khan's allegations came a day after Pakistanis went to polls in a historic general elections which would see a smooth transition of power from one democratically elected government to another.

His first public remarks, made in a televised statement, came 17 hours after his main rival, former prime minister and chief of Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif, declared victory.

Khan had vowed that the polls would sweep his PTI into power.

On Saturday, Sharif declared victory in the May 11 national polls, saying his party would fulfil all the promises made to the people of Pakistan.

Sharif added that he was certain that his party would emerge as the single largest party that needed no outside support or “borrowed seats”.
