Wimbledon entered the twilight zone on Monday as Serena Williams became the latest high-profile champion to fade into oblivion at a tournament where reputations and star status are counting for nothing. William's downfall also meant that Sloane Stephens was the only American, man or woman, to reach the quarter-finals.

Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic beat Australia Bernard Tomic, Serbia's Novak Djokovic beat Tommy Haas of Germany, Andy Murray of Britain beat Russia's Mikhail Youzhny , Juan Martin Del Potro beat Andreas Seppi of Italy, while Fernando Verdasco of Spain beat Kenny De Schepper of France and Spain's David Ferrer beat Ivan Dodig in their men's single matches at day seven of the Wimbledon tennis championships.
