PESHAWAR, June 24: Three persons, including a traffic police officer, were killed and another was injured in two different incidents of terrorism in the provincial metropolis on Monday.

Sources said that suspected militants gunned down Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Amanullah Khan and his driver on Dalazak Road. The incident took place at about 8:30 when the DSP left his residence in Yousafabad area and was on way to his office in his official jeep, they added.

Sources said that the driver, Amjad Khan, was killed on the spot and the DSP received multiple bullet injuries in the attack. The injured police officer was rushed to Lady Reading Hospital but he could not survive.

Both of the victims received bullet injuries in their checks and heads, sources said.

Talking to journalists, SSP Traffic Asif Iqbal said that according to preliminary investigations the attackers were armed with pistols and riding a motorcycle. They were wearing masks and disappeared soon after the attack, he added.

The SSP said that the deceased official had not received any specific threat from terrorists. However, there were threats to all the law enforcers, he said.

The funeral prayers of the deceased policemen were offered at Malik Saad Khan Police Lines. The DSP was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Gulozo village in Peshawar.

Meanwhile, one person was killed and another received injuries in a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Mathra area.

The blast took place at about 2am in Terai Payan locality in the limits of Mathra police station, killing the caretaker of the mosque. The injured identified as Shehzad was rushed to Lady Reading Hospital for treatment.

He told police that he used to sleep in the local mosque. “We five people were inside the mosque at the time of blast,” he added.

He said that before the blast someone opened firing on them and he received a bullet in his leg. “In the meantime Fazl Hadi, the caretaker of the mosque, shouted that someone had placed a suspicious bag in the mosque,” he said.

The injured said that Fazl Hadi picked the bag to throw it out of the mosque. “Unfortunately, it was a bomb, which went off in the hands of the caretaker when he reached the main gate,” Shehzad said.

At the time of attack, he said, two elderly villagers identified as Hameed Gul and Faqir Shah were also sleeping in the mosque but they remained unhurt. He said that they used to sleep in the mosque since long.

Police claimed to have taken a suspected person into custody and investigation was in progress in that regard.

The blast also damaged a portion of the mosque. An official of bomb disposal unit said that about two kilograms of explosives were used in the blast. Police and area people rushed to the spot to rescue the victims and shifted them to the hospital.
