Islam at war – with itself

From Aleppo in Syria to Quetta in Balochistan, Muslims are engaged in the slaughter of other Muslims. The numbers are enormous: over 93,000 killed in the Syrian civil war and over 48,000 dead in Pakistan. Millions have perished in similar intra-Muslim conflicts in the past four decades. Many wonder if the belief in Islam was sufficient to bind Muslims in peace with each other.

Since the end of the Second World War, the world has moved in two distinct directions. The West, mostly Christian, has tried to minimise the intra-European conflict and has largely been successful with some exceptions. The Muslim world, on the other hand, has fallen into one violent conflict after another, involving mostly Muslims. Several intra-Muslim conflicts continue to simmer as proxy wars. In the 80s, the Iran-Iraq war alone left millions dead. More recently, a car bomb in Iraq on Sunday killed another 39 in the sectarian warfare between the Shias and Sunnis that killed at least 1,045 in May 2013.

As the violence amongst Muslims increases, most Muslims prefer denial or look for scapegoats. Those in denial believe no such violence exists and the entire issue is made up by the western-controlled media. Others blame it on scapegoats – Indians and Americans are the most frequently blamed. The overwhelming evidence, however, suggests that the sectarian and tribal divisions amongst Muslims and justifying violence in the name of religion are the primary causes of why Islam is at war with itself.

In Pakistan, confessions and appalling claims of responsibility by the spokespersons for the Tehreek-i-Taliban and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi should leave no doubt about where the guilt resides. At the same time, the Pakistani Intelligence agencies have put together incriminating evidence running into hundreds of thousands of pages against the extremist sectarian outfits, al Qaeda affiliates, the nationalist militias in Balochistan, and others who have perpetrated indiscriminate violence against civilians and the State resulting in over 48,000 deaths since 2004.

The hate-fuelled gulfs that divide Muslims are so wide that not only unarmed civilians, but doctors and others who try to save victims of violence, are also targeted by the extremists. The attack on the Bolan Medical Complex on Saturday, which left scores dead including four nurses, was not the first of its kind. A sectarian attack in Karachi in February 2010 was followed by a bomb attack on the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Hospital where victims were rushed for treatment. More than 25 Shia Muslims perished in the two attacks.

And while the Muslim on Muslim violence is claiming victims all over Pakistan, the violence against non-Muslims, including Hindus and Christians, often brings together Muslims of different stripes, who would otherwise be fighting each other, in attacking religious minorities.

The targeted killings of university professors in Karachi and Quetta, the murder of Shia doctors and professionals, and the attacks on the shrines of patron saints are all evidence of the fact that Muslims have been killing other Muslims while being motivated by hate and using Islam to justify violence.

Why is that the belief in Islam is not sufficient to prevent violence amongst Muslims? From the very first day Muslims are taught that their belief in Islam trumps all other identities that they may hold. Their skin colour, tribe, caste or creed, none matters once they enter the fold of Islam. Why then, have millions of Muslims died at the hands of their fellow believers?

Political, religious, and other leaders in the Muslim world have kept the dialogue focused on the conflicts where Muslims have been the victims. The Bosnian conflict, the communal violence in India, which has caused the death of thousands of Muslims, and the Arab-Israeli conflict have been the focus of Muslim leaders. Seldom has the dialogue focused on why Muslims kill other Muslims. And even if the topic ever comes up, it ends up being an exercise in mass scapegoating.

Muslim societies have thus evolved into places where revenge is confused with justice, forgiveness with weakness, and peace with cowardice. These are the places where unholy men wage holy wars against unarmed civilians, pitching Muslims against other Muslims.

Back to Quetta

Imagine the state of mind of the person who wore a suicide vest and boarded the bus carrying young women whose bright faces were lit with the pride of being educated. There was no reason to attack these innocent women who were unarmed and unrelated to any conflict. But that did not deter the suicide bomber who proceeded to kill them and herself in a suicide attack.

Moments before the blast, the young women were ignorant of the pain that would soon be inflicted on them. They must be smiling and talking to their friends, planning for the rest of the day and for what lay ahead in their lives. The suicide bomber looked at the faces of the women who, if given the opportunity, would most certainly have improved the plight of their impoverished nation.

And then the blast. Some died instantaneously. Others must have suffered the agonising pain of the wounds and the resulting fire that engulfed the bus and consumed its riders. Those who survived the blast must have heard the cries for help emerging from deep inside the bus. The rescuers must have rushed to the bus, but could not assist the victims since the leaping flames kept everyone at bay.

Somewhere in or near Quetta a group of men chanted with pride, Allah-u-Akbar (God is great), eulogising the female suicide bomber for killing the very women who held the most promise for Pakistan. Their spokesperson called the news outlets to claim responsibility for the attack on unarmed women. Later, at the Bolan Medical Complex in Quetta, another group of men, armed with AK-47 and wearing suicide vests, engaged the security personnel in a standoff that left several more dead, including four nurses who were attending to the wounded from the earlier blast.

This was all done in the name of Islam. This will be repeated sooner than later. Some would argue this is not the “real” Islam. Does it really matter what real Islam is when its true followers cannot stand against those who use religion to commit genocide?

At the bottom of human conduct is primitive instinct of self interest and survival. Other binding elements are either transitory in nature or used selectively to serve a particular cause or a notion. Religion happens to be one of those binders. In today's world of information technology and scientific evidence, it is hard to drive people like herd of cattle. More and more people world over are abandoning the practice of their religions because of the distinction between what they see as a reality and what they are expected to believe.

Dear,

What I believe, it is due to the absence of IEMAAN. We have been divided into various religious groups & casts. Moreover there is lack of LEADERSHIP in our country & around the Muslim countries. There is no UNITY & FAITH in Muslims. What we are doing? Nothing but SINS. How could we claim to be a Muslim without ISLAMIC practices. What is difference between an Muslim & others. KALMA & afterward Islamic practices. How many people in the Pakistan & around the globe are doing Islamic practices correctly & regularly. QUESTION to be answered by BILLIONS. I pray ALLAH for the prosperity, unity, faith among Muslims. Ameen

"most Muslims prefer denial or look for scapegoats." The heart of the problem. We are taught not to take responsibilities for our wrongs.

My 'GPS' principle: One cannot know how to reach a certain destination unless one knows where one currently is. Due to our state of denial, we do not know where we currently are.

Dr Murtaza, you are absolutely right to question muslims on muslims violence, there surely has to be a reason greater than just simply differences in the school of Islam you belong to and It is too easy to blame all the violence on external forces, though there may be some truth to it, but it is the Muslims themselves that need to take responsibility for their actions. I hope and pray that one day this moment of madness that Muslims are going through will be over and Islam will return to its original form, peaceful and accepting of everyone in a society. Thanks for your article.

Indeed a sour reality that Muslims are being genocide by other Muslims. The last mishap was really very disappointed and was an example of cowardice. Those who claiming the responsibility must know that Islam doesn't allow its army to kill non-muslims' children, women and old men even if there is a war. But those who died were Muslim women. I felt pity for those who are doing this in the name of Islam. I would like to request to the new elected government to eradicate such groups by hook or by crook. If it is a proxy war then there must be some strong foreign policies needed to stop such accidents.

The problem does not lie with Islam , but it does lies with Muslims themselves ...........Right now Muslims are killing other Muslims and other non-Muslims in their own countries ..........The reason why Europe has been able to reduce their differences was through seeking more education and developing a culture of tolerance. Muslims need to do the same ......seek more education.......most of the Muslims are uneducated and have no respect in this post 9/11 world.............

Islam and muslims are being attacked (in Libya, Syria, Iraq etc) by democratic countries, under the cloak of shia sunni or other factionalism and it is for all very plain to see. Except ofcourse if you want to malign Islam itself. However, wheher it were the Mongols hordes or colonoliasts or the todays neo-colonialists. Islam always rises when it is considered gone and dead. As it is the truth and the last message of the creator for guidance of mankind.

Three reasons that I can think of (with comparisons with other major religions):

a) Commonly held Muslim belief that there is such a thing as "TRUE" Islam. No such equivalent occurs in Christianity (where there are a dime a dozen variants living in peace) or Hinduism where every person holds his own belief and there is no organized religion. No compulsion exists in Buddhism either which is more organized than Hinduism.

b) Commonly held Muslim belief that deviants from whatever version of Islam a group holds to be true can and should be killed. Moreover this is the correct thing to do from a religious stand point. Both Christians and Hindus have come a long ways (centuries/millenia) from such belief and are trying to put in sensible legal structure into their societies that is devoid of religion. Buddhism has never had such beliefs.

and possibly the most important:

c) The concept that religion and the state are one. Christianity is the only other religion that had this back until the Middle Ages.

No amount of education or wealth will help with the above.

Muslim are butchering each other on the name of Islam….what a shameful history they are making. We always believed that Islam is a peaceful religion and spreads love for all but what are we experiencing sectarian madness in the Islamic world. Are these cruel events taking place showing signs of nature for the incoming Messiah or Imam Mehdi who will bring them through divine wisdom as one homogeneous Muslim brotherhood? Is it a wishful thinking? Or Islam has gone in the hands of lawless people?

Muslims have been killing each other from day one, during first 50 years they killed 3 of their most belovd Caliphs and slaughtered most beloved grand son and family of their prophet. The blood bath is going on, if there was any progress during 1400 yeras it was by those who had liberal attitutes. It is obvious that the message has not been understood.

An eye opener. Historically religion seems to have encouraged both inter and intra religion violence violence. There has been violence between Catholics and Protestants, Shia and Suni. And of course between religions Muslims against Christians, Hindus against Muslims Hindus and Sikhs. Muslims and Jews Hatred is encouraged by religion despite the fact that we are told that religions teach love and peace. The fact is that for thousands of years religion has encouraged and caused violence and untold misery. The Christians had their crusades. Muslims still kill in the name of Jihad, Millions were killed, maimed and suffered unforgettable misery during India Pakistan partion all in the name of religion. In Godra riots Muslims burned Hindus alive in train bogies and then Hindus raped and killed inocent Muslims. I am aware of some Muslim religious leaders in Africa who say killing Christians is their religious duty as they are Kafirs. We are told that it is not the fault of religions but of those who practice it.

Is it not time to abandon an institution which has historically let itself to be misused and has caused untold misery to mankind??

Lashkar e Jhangvi called the local press office and said they did this gruesome act on young women because they wanted to revenge the security operations in one of their towns. What a great excuse. God will surely reward you Lashkar e Jhangvi for inflicting pain to the most vulnerable.

From the very first day Muslims are taught that their belief in Islam trumps all other identities that they may hold................

This is where the problems lie for Muslims. So an Indian Muslim cannot sing vande mataram praising the mother country antagonizing Hindus. In Bangladesh, some Muslims cannot re conciliate to the fact that Bengali culture is predominantly Hindu culture. In Pakistan, Muslims cannot tolerate their women watching Hindi movies in the fear of diluting the effect of religious influence.

For the Muslims, their world revolves around their religion. But Muslims are not, repeat not, the most honest people in the world. Quite the opposite. In every non-Muslim country in Europe, Muslims are very highly represented in the prisons.

I have said it before here, on Dawn blog, and say it again: the problem is so glaringly obvious that everyone has missed the jungle for the trees. The problem is Islam itself. You can sing 'Islam is a religion of peace' till the cows come home, but that does not make it so. Muhammad spent a great deal of time in battles and hence Islam was born in violence. Compare that with Buddhism or Hinduism and the difference in philosophies becomes glaringly obvious.

Concisely stated. The problem lies in "lack of open discussion" in Islam. Any one who challenges the "accepted norms" is subjected to Violence. This goes to the beginning of Islam especially relating to schism between Sunnis and Shias. Tribal areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan have embraced Islam because they can justify the tribal actions in the name of Islam. Emphasis is on rituals. Until the Mullahs are able to explain rationally (rather than with force) their actions, Islam will get stuck in rut.

We need to scratch beneath the surface to identify the core problems. There is problem of poverty, lack of healthcare, lack of infrastructure, lack of opportunities which leads to violence. We took on a war that was not ours, and this is the consequence. Pakistan was one of the pioneer Islamic nations on earth before this war on terror. Our scientists, engineers and artists were among the best in the world. We had people come from all over the world, and now it is just chaos and carnage. There are governments ( in either sides of our borders and across oceans ) that are bent upon maligning the name of Pakistan. We need to remain vigilant, and identify the power behind the throne.

ISLAM AT WAR - with itself ( Within Itself ) or appropriate to say Muslim Brother fighting / killing there own Brother on the Name of Cast, Sect and Region, Does we think why we kill our own Brother or humanity at large, What we will gain from the killing, Why we are so uneducated, Why we are so Barbaric, Look at the country dominated & ruled by Muslim Molvis & Mullahs - you will find graveyards bigger than our villages because killing is our every day routine business. What is the root cause maybe 1) LACK OF EDUCATION 2) POVERTY 3) LUST FOR MONEY & POWER, - general analysis points towards point no (3) LUST FOR MONEY & POWER - Islam in itself is oneness - but our so called religious leader ( Fanatic Leaders ) have divided us into many sects, so they can control us, dominate us ( Divide & Rule policy ) they (Religious Leaders) derive us from our basic right EDUCATION so they can corrupt our young minds for there own use & purpose. May ALLAH give us wisdom & courage to expose this Leaders, Mullahs & Molvies and may peace prevail in Islam again till day of Judgement.

Dear Murtaza, I commend you on your courage to write this article. I empathize with your pain, and agree with your basic analysis that intra-muslim violence is often swept under the carpet by the very people affected.. However, I do take exception to your view of everything from a religious point of view... It almost seems that you're OK with the killings if they are not intra-muslim... Why can't you use the word 'Pakistani' or just 'people' for the citizens of Pakistan? Why does everything have to be viewed from the perspective of a muslim identity? "From the very first day Muslims are taught that their belief in Islam trumps all other identities that they may hold. Their skin colour, tribe, caste or creed, none matters once they enter the fold of Islam." I guess such a unipolar identity is easily hijacked by redefining islam to be suitable for one's political ends. Why can't religion be on equal footing with a person's other identities? And I wouldn't call people who kill women, children and caregivers human, let alone muslim. IMHO, people are multi-dimensional, and religious affiliations should be intensely private and one-to-one with god. Please keep writing such articles which give an opportunity to introspect... Thanks

Jun 17, 2013 07:17pm

The reason for this violence can be clearly surmised from the article. " From the very first day Muslims are taught that their belief in Islam trumps all other identities that they may hold". This implied that violence against those who do not believe was not expressly forbidden, especially among the less educated ones. Muslim history is replete violence against non-believers. But then when the population of non-believers has been "ethnically cleaned" violence does not go away, and it makes Muslims to begin differentiating among them and new outcasts become available for violence to play out. Until Muslims begin to see brotherhood in all humanity this scourge will remain.

Muslims should stop depending on clerics etc. and start reading Quran and understanding basic principals of Islam. As per above verse there is no place for issuing fatwas against people practicing different methods to reach God so long they don't create hatred and fitna. We must respect others believes and should never do any thing that hurts other feelings.

Another beautiful article! I will quote a saying that I read somewhere, "Evil only prevails when good people fail to do anything about it." Why are we surprised at muslims killing each other? The muslim history is a lot more on killing and whole lot lesser on education, productivity (I do not mean population production) and creativity. Religion, from the time when man came to be aware of the Divine, has never been a factor that united people. In fact, religion has always been used to divide humanity and has been the cause of hatred among people. The history of Pakistan and the most recent of sudan bear witness to this fact. Will Muslims ever be a united people?. I for one do not think so. Our religious class and our Islamic Scholars will ensure that the hate-flame burns on. Will muslim be a better as people. Here, I have hope. A lot of young muslims, born away from islamic lands are getting educated. They will form a better face of muslims in the future. What we the seniors and elderly need to do is to keep the mullahs away from these young and educated. Then there will be hope.

The problem is that Muslims in general don't tolerate anything which goes against their beliefs. It is impossible to say something in Pakistan without offending someone. Dear Mustafa Haider: We need to stop blaming ISLAM for these problems...muslims are killing muslims because they have no respect for their fellow muslims...they are busy cursing, looting, envying, their friends, neighbors, relatives. I feel more safer at the hands of non muslims to be honest...if I ask for their advise they give me what they would prefer for themselves...when I ask if they can help me they are upfront to say yes or no...when I do something wrong I get the punishment justly, when I do something right I am acknowledged accordingly, if I drop my credit card by mistake , I get it back immediately without any loss, I can freely roam at night and day fearlessly anywhere among them ... @umair: It is easy to call these people "so-called muslims", but if these thigs keep on happening again and again all over the Islamic world, then there is something clearly wrong with the philosophy that is being followed. The very concept of killing someone who is not a true Muslim does not make sense, whether it is Shias or Ahmedis or those who are non-Muslim.

How can a group of people be confident that they are right in believing in something that is totally abstract and at the same time think that all others who do not agree with them are wrong and should be killed?

History has shown that religion clearly is not a major binding force and that ethnicity and language are more important.

The radicals are defaming Islam. These radicals call themselves muslim and are carrying out these attacks in the name of Islam. Unless muslims realize that this tumor is within their own community and try to treat it from inside, there is little hope for the problems facing the muslim world to disappear. Who are financing these militants? Where is the money coming from? Will we continue to say its from India and its from Western Countries? When will we realize that there are forces within the muslim community (read middle east) who encourage and support these militants because they wish to impose their brand of Islam on the whole community. There is no hope for a new beginning until you look down in your own collar before blaming everything on outside forces.

People who believe that true Muslims can never do such things are living in denial. There is no example in the history of Islam where someone could say something against Allah and Mohammad and no get executed especially whenever Muslims were in power . All other branches and any progressive thinking to bring the people and society as per evolving needs and wishes is pushed by western culture and therefore, not good for anyone living in their area. This twisted thinking is the root-cause of all violence perpetrated by so called "Islami outfits" practicing violence and killing to sway their hold in the area with utter disregard for others' views, opinions, freedom and compulsions. First article is true but it's not Islam which is at war with itself. Only Muslims are at war among themselves and that too because they have put the secular teachings of Islam on a back burner. When you have theocracy running your lives, so, much so that now questioning the clergy or analyzing Islam is banned than this is what you reap. It is only a Muslim who cannot question his or her own beliefs despite his or her beliefs contradicts the teachings of Islam and the practice of beloved and peaceful Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him). When Muslims deny the teachings of the prophet of Islam, and do not accept the Imam of the age the Promised Messiah (A.S.), Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani, then don't blame Islam. Blame only Muslims as Islam is never at war among itself, an example of Ahmadis in Pakistan and elsewhere is a good example. It is about time for you all to pay heed and analyze your own beliefs rather blaming Islam.

It is nonsense for anyone to pretend that any religion makes for improvement of the life and personality of its followers. A good man will do his job with sincerity, whatever his job, whether peon or prime minister. He does something for someone else if he can. If he cannot, he does not hurt anyone. If a man is following this, he is meeting the demands of any and every religion. God, if there is one, does not expect anything more from him. Does this conflict with the teaching of any organized religion? Religion in human experience has degenerated into sheer obscurantism because thekedars of every religion have a vested interest in keeping their followers in ignorance and complete inability and unreadiness to inquire. The thekedars ensure that rituals are followed rigorously. That ensures their vocation and livelihood. This applies to all religions – without exception. People use religion and cause suffering to large numbers of people. V. C. Bhutani, Edinburgh, 17 Jun 2013, 1720 GMT

I agreed with what you said that Your leaders do not talk about it and it needs to be addressed but i do not agree with the last line (Some would argue this is not the “real” Islam. Does it really matter what real Islam is when its true followers cannot stand against those who use religion to commit genocide?)Yes This not the Real Islam that are following if they Are killing innocent i do matter because Islam is Real But followers are Not.

As long as muslims blame other mulsims, on-muslims, west and east, other religion but their own, democracy and other political system, iraq to Afghanistan, Bush to Cameron, this issue of violence is not going to end. You have to believe that old books are the product of human development, society and civilization rather than GIVEN. Other people have moved on but not you because of the unquestionable GRIP it has on you. The greatest asset we humans have are enlightenment and coexistence, not religion. in west, I have met quite a few so called moderate and well educated muslims and they analyze conflicts well and also they blame their own muslims if it is true BUT, however, i have never seen any moderate or Muslim ,for that matter, even mince a word about the book which was written few hundred years back. dear brothers, you have problem everywhere because you think strongly the your religion is infallible and unquestionable. Please, it is not Bush or Cheny.

@Silajit: Hinduism has local level organization, and even the World Hindu Parishad. But Hindus work at the community level first and foremost, without designs on world dominance. Christianity has grown with schisms and at least 1338 denominations exist officially. They do not feel threatened by the other sects, although world dominations has been their major theme. Islam has no built-in mechanism to allow for schisms--although they have happened since its inception. Islamic hyper-sensitivity to "insult" and "blasphemy" have become dangerous tools. Finally: There is the world- wide tussle between Sunni and Shia versions of Islam. Perhaps age will mellow the vehement Muslim who likes to micro-manage individual lives--even when they know that they are functioning still in the 15--1600 hundreds like Puritan Christians. Most Hindus and Christians (plight of Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses excepted) do not waste their time deciding who is Hindu, Christian and who is not!

I think this is the most important issue confronting the so-called islamic world. Christians, Jews, Hindus and Bhuddists are all at peace with each other -the religions that we very arrogantly reject. It is really very difficult to pinpoint the explanatory variables which bring about this mayhem. But the sectarian fault lines in Islam when ruthlessly exploited for power politics can explain to a large extent the inhuman killing and merciless bloodshed. This issue needs to be analyzed intellectually and discussed politically if we there is willingness to counteract the rising tides stemming from this age old tsunami.

Belief in Islam, praying 5 times a day, fasting, zakat and hajj is NOT enough .. these are a Muslim's mandatory responsibilities towards Allah (swt). Today's Muslim will do all of that yet he'll lie, cheat, steal, rob, rape and kill. In other words, he will NOT fulfill his responsibilities towards the fellow Muslims, humans and society .. he will NOT be nice to human beings, in complete contradiction to the teaching of Islam. Please, pardon me because I don't know the exact narration and source of this story but it goes like this: "Once a Muslim came to the Khalifah (maybe Umar, I don't remember) to ask his advice about starting a business deal with another Mulsim. The Khalifah asked him if he knew that the man was good. He said that he saw the man praying in the masjid regularly. The Khalifah said, "You don't know him; go and ask his family and his acquaintances about his interactions with them .. only then, you'll know what he is like." As a society, we must become 'practicing' Muslims .. our yardstick must NOT be based on beard, prayer offering, clothes above the ankles, hijab, nikab, etc. A Muslim is the one who not only fulfills his obligations towards Allah (swt) but more importantly, as commanded by Him, treats His creations with love and affection. We must redefine the way we have been taught to recognize a 'good' Muslim .. We must NOT expect that a bearded shopkeeper will be more honest than a non-bearded one!

I thought that was a great write up. Most Muslim countries where this carnage is going on have different reasons for this. Some are political, some societal and some economic but the common link in all is religion or the misuse of religion. In Pakistan most of our problems are self inflicted, religion is the catalyst used to further the destruction. The solution so far has been to treat the symptom but not the disease.

"Muslim societies have thus evolved into places where revenge is confused with justice, forgiveness with weakness, and peace with cowardice." This single line is sufficient to explain the real cause of this so called "war".. Infact Islam had been at war since it's inception in 7th centuary..This is the only religion which was spread by swords..Sooner than later, it had to come to the Muslims themselves..

While muslims kill muslims, our leaders and middleclass people keep repeating the mantra: "Islam is a religion of peace". There is an adage in Urdu: "Chor ke darhi mein tinka"

The fact is that muslims have never been at peace with each other. The only difference is that in the olden days non-muslim world was as violent as the muslim world. In the last 2 hundred years other societies have moved on, and we continue the status quo.

Mr. Haider, how wrong could you be!! Living in Canada, I would expect you to know that the greatest shift in the second half of the 20th century has been the growth of the Asia-Pacific. In the 21st century, the economic and political weight will decisively shift East. Those who think that Islam is something tangible and it's in danger then they need to think twice about it. Moreover, there is no need to make believe in your self created terminologies and ideologies as the Noble Quran proves a beautiful and a complete code of life. It addresses all the issues. But we so regretfully have divided ourself into different sects, and this is the greatest tragedy, specially of the Muslim nations.

We consider the teachings of Quran no more appealing, and now it is known as a religion of trerrorism. When we are hit by these trype of allegation we cannot even counter them, as we are not knowledgeble enough about our own religion. And what to talk about Hinnuduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Jewism ---If only one can look on the surface level the discrepoencies in the religion and their repercussions than it will take away one's senses.

The Quran most frequently states ---" Indeed we have made this book easy to read and remember and is there anyone who will take heed " ( Sura Qamar ) . Only in Sura Qamar this verse is repeated 6 times, and at many other stations in the Quran. It is we who are rejecting the teachings of Islam --it is we who are highly impressed by the west ---it is we who are the greatest hypocrites. We have lost our direction, and we consider it to be a small matter, when in sight of Allah its the most grievous offense. We are not interested what the west is doing but we must look into our own affairs. We are accountable to Allah and not to the east or west ---- " There have already come to them recitals wherein there is enough to check them " ( Al Quran --Sura Qamar, Verse 4 )

Great post my friend, too bad most Muslims in the world will disagree because they are blinded by the so called 'Religion of Peace' or are in a state of denial. As you can tell from my name, i was born Muslim but have lost all faith in it. One judges a religion/country/tribe/race etc by the actions of its people. In my 31 years of life, i haven't seen Islam or Muslim's make any substantial peaceful contribution to our society.

I'm glad i don't live in any Islamic country, i probably would be stoned to death for criticizing Islam.

I cant wait for the day when Muslims realize that religion is a man made thing in order to live a disciplined lifestyle. Nothing more, nothing less. Just like the West, I'm hoping there is a day when Muslim's realize this and stop the harm they have caused to society.

Before the fall of Ottoman Empire, Muslim majority societies were comparatively more tolerant and peaceful than the others. Jews did not had to suffer pogroms as they did in Europe and Russia. Christians were able to practice their religion and build churches. In subcontinent, Hinduism is still the majority religion as contrast to Europe where the old religions were almost completely replace by Christianity. But at the end of Ottoman empire, puritanical movements started which stressed the use of violence instead of Scientific knowledge to compete the world. This first resulted in the breakup of Ottoman empire, later this ideology was exported to other parts of world e.g. Palestine, Afghanistan and Pakistan. More recently this is being exported to North Africa and different secular countries i.e. Libya and Syria. This is causing a lot of bloodshed and will continue to do so as long as it is not stopped.

The trouble is that other people also strongly believe in the greatness of their religions. So it is not possible to bluff them. Especially if they have any knowledge of history. If they have, then they are aware of the fact that Muslims have been fighting among themselves from the very beginning. In fact right after the death of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) Muslims started fighting and killing each other. Three of the first four Califs were brutally assassinated. The assassins did not belong to any other religion. Since then, dynasty after dynasty came to power by mass killing their predecessors in the most brutal and savage way they could think of, all in the name of Islam. What ever Islam teaches is simply irrelevant. Muslims are and have always been a bunch of savage, barbaric, cruel, bloody-minded, atrocious, violent and merciless beings. @umair: The prescribed religion is one thing and the practiced religion is another. People will not judge the faith by what is written or what was practiced 1400 years ago, but how you it is practiced today.

If you feel strongly that a few people are hijacking the religion then what stops you from going after them? do you not love your faith? or is it not worth losing your comfort and status? Or do you believe that the government should take care of the matters of faith.

15 years ago we had the Bosnian crises. Christian Serbs massacred Bosnian Muslims and Croatians; how did the Christian world react? By attacking and relentlessly bombing the Serbs. So much so that the bombs didn't stop even on Easter Day (which is equivalent to our Eid). Why? They didn't want their faith to be soiled with this WWII type of mindset.

Why are you still sitting in your home? You should be getting ready to fight. Unless of course the only thing you are good for is prayers.

The problem is lack of flow of information. Pakistan and Pakistanis have been living in a bubble for so long. For example, almost all Pakistanis think that Pakistan won the 1965 war with India, whereas, it is only a myth. Furthermore, somehow they believe that calling yourself a true muslim automatically makes you a better person than everyone else. Somehow, it is ok to kill someone for offending their beliefs, but it is not ok to argue your points with words and logic. 100% of my blood is Pakistani (though I am 100% American by choice). Pakistanis are great and even brilliant individuals. Islam is NOT at war with itself. West has declared War on Islam. West, the Crusader, always the quintessential highwayman, the predator vanquished all except Islam. Muslims survived. And yes it matters what Islam is. Islam is Islam, as gold is gold. No equal. Don't meme it lead. See facts through educated objective, not sectarian, eyes. Advocating internecine strife, civil war, is not the way.

Your stats acknowledge that forty times more Sunnis killed than all minorities combined. Two million Sunni destitute in Swat, terror unleashed on Waziristan. Why no Drones over Karachi? Why Baluchistan in turmoil? Doesn’t this demolish your thesis?

Don't confuse forest for trees. Recall science 101, Math202: When you take baseline of a system in equilibrium then insert a test variable the resulting disequilibrium is its function. When repeatable at 95% confidence, its cause not association. Can be quantified, attributed to the alien variable, the invader.

An alien was forced on the Middle East. To accommodate this usurper the system was to be broken, to be reconstructed in its image. War, attrition, hostilities, looting resources below market are all destabilization tactics imposed on the once stable system.

Secular Iraq was cat's paw. Used, discarded. Libya, done. Syria now. Afghanistan still on. Iran next. Pakistan's nukes stand in the way of total annihilation of the Islamic World. Thus unraveling, dismantling Pakistan has become top priority. Lateral methods are settling the issue. Implosion, covert operations, total war, are vested Think Tanks pragmatic options.

Treasure, diplomatic manipulation, vote rigging, blackmail, assassinations, drone terror are tools to attain objective. Muslims are too brutalized to see total picture. Lives without value, betrayed, lost. Those who can press buttons thousands of miles away need no suicide vests, last refuge of the disfranchised, desperate, misled, hopeless.

Carnage by missile is not shown. Imagine the blood gore dismembered burnt bodies, grief, revenge, a single Hell-fire missile unleashes. Suicide vests are child’s toys. No match to Big Boys rocketing collateral damage, once proud Muslims.

Those of us who can see this dance macabre had much riding on the Great Khan and Ms.Mazari but rigging, manipulation and ignorance of the Pakistani unwashed won the day for Crusader's Viceroy Elite.

Please sir, think beyond your ivory tower, take those sectarian blinders off your eyes. This analysis do

There were hundreds of Munafiqs during time of messenger of Allah. Allah (SBW) had revealed their names to the Prophet(PBUH). Abdullah b.Ubay b. Salul, the leader of Munafiqs refused to fight along with the Prophet Muhhammad (PBUH) in the battle of Ditch and left the battlefiled with 300 supporters. He worked very hard and used all the means to destroy the solidarity among Muslims. Messenger of Allah did not wage war against him or his tribe. Actually when Abdullah died , the messenger of Allah gave his shirt to enshroud him and prayed for his forgiveness upon his son's request. Messenger of Allah's action brought one thousand people of his tribe to Islam. The problem is not in Islam but in the muslim who don't follow it. Non belivers in the west blame Islam when a muslim commits a crime. They don't blame Christianity when Hitler killed millions of Jews in the second world war. McVeigh killed hundres of people in Oklahoma and he was a Christian but christianity was never questioned. Pl. don't blame islam for actions of few bad apples.

dear sir, this is not the problem with our religion, ISLAM, but the problem is with some of our criminal countrymen. it needs one dirty person to kill one hundred thousand innocent people. overall we MUSLIMS are united, but certain criminals within us are creating problems. ISLAM DOES NOT ALLOW ANYBODY WHO IS INNOCENT TO BE KILLED. a bit of radicalisation took these killer people away. these people need to understand that killing an innocent will take the killer to hell forever. WE NEED MORE TOLERANCE AND RESPECT FOR OTHERS WHICH IS THE BASIC TEACHING OF ISLAM. islam needs peaceful living here and jannah hereafter. MAY ALLAH GIVE US HIDAYAH...AAAMEEEN

The titile," Islam at- War with Itself", is a wrong title. It should be " Muslims at War with Muslims". History tell us that there had been many much more killings by Muslims against Muslims than between Muslims and Non-muslims. And such killings among Muslims has nothing to do with the religion of Islam. It was carried out to achieve supremacy and hegemony over others.

Everything you have written is correct. Now, how to fix this cancer of hatred? It is too late for this generation.......we can begin teaching tolerance and acceptance to the young ones. The only solution for Pakistan is to hunt down the perpetrators and their supporters and "neutralize" them ruthlessly. Drones are our friends! The young women were not blown up in retaliation for a drone strike.....they were murdered because they stood for knowledge.

Each society needs a safety valve for the people who think differently or rationally. The secular Govts provide this valve by remaining aloof from personal beliefs of the populace unless and until serious civil law and order problems come up. But Muslims, as they have not accepted the religion by choice, are so insecure that they do no allow anyone to challenge their system. They themselves may be condemning others all the time others. e g in Pakistan even to-day blame for all the evils is laid on pre-Islamic Hindu customs, though those customs have disappeared from Hinduism centuries ago. Muslims should become tolerant and Islamic scholars should start finding fault with Islam/Quran and Prophet. But this is a very distant dream and heretical. So the war within and with others will continue.

How can it be Islam's problem if some is being killed on its name. A mother killed her son because that he was interupting her when she was playing "FarmVille" on Facebook. And God knows how many teens are exploited through other social media. Not to mention the risk today's teens are of committing suicide because of general media (forget social media now) and these opinions are not just mine, they're been echoed in journal articles by Silenzio, Gould, Stack etc. 1000s commit suicide every year around the world because of general media. It doesn't make sense but they do. So what should be done? Should be close down news channels and blame the broadcasting industry even though we all know how biased they can get sometimes? The answer is no. And same goes for Islam, if a group (and I mean group because all the "Muslim" terrorist combined wouldn't be enough to fill a small city) of "Muslims" are being idiots does it make an observer like yourself feel Islam is bad or flawed? How can you arrive at this conclusion? And moreover how can anyone of you even think an Islamic regime was bad in the day? (Don't get me wrong, I like democracy, even Islamic regimes were much more democratic than this, Khalifas were people like me and you) Was it because women were covered? Oh you think they were FORCED to be covered, which is a shame because anyone who thinks that doesn't have even a rudimentary skill of researching in him/her. It was peaceful time. People, common people, were beyond rich during some of the Khalifa's rule. Abdullah Ibn Omar, Omar (R.A) and many others.

Its kind of sad that people blame Islam/Christianity/Jewism for all or even a fraction of the problem that was happening. If not for religon human kind would've killed each other centuries ago. I'm a muslim and I'm proud of being one and I dont see anything bad in Islam.

Bottom line, grow up and start dealing with out own problems rather than watching news with a cup of tea in one hand remote in the other and saying this country/religion is incomplete because its they who are incomplete.

The problem lies in our heroes - Nadir Shah, Mohamed Bin Qasim, Manhmud of Ghazni, Chengiz Khan, Taimur.... and the belief that rape, pillage, war, cruelty, enslavement, battle... are glorious endeavours. Just look at our history books...encouraging , even enticing violence and martyrdom. Why cant our heroes also be Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Al Barouni, Guru Nanak Dev, Baba Farid, Bhulleh Shah, Data Saheb....and thousands of those who show compassion and humanity? @IBN-E-ASHFAQUE: This is the very thought which has degrading the muslim community around the world and among themselves. People who cry that their counter fellow is been harassed / oppressed in some other country they forgot two things. 1. In all the other countries, even other caste, religious exist. They mingle gel, be part of that country by respecting the tradition and value of that country and become more of that country and eventually they become partner and grow. Why are they not treated as badly as Muslims feel they are been?. In India, the population of Muslims minority has grown three times as compare to any other minority. But the communal violence chart is displayed more often so as to gain sympathy from the one sided channelized mind. This is the reason you find more extremism than in any other religion. 2. Why not they check how they perform when it comes to treatment of minority in Islamic state? Because in the bottom of your heart that is UN-Islamic too?

@Farrukh: This quest for homogemiety and uniformity is probably the biggest reason behind the inter-muslim violence. Each sect wants to prove they have a direct line to God. It's not just that people dont practice a single version of Islam; there is no agreement on any one version of the 'right' practices either. I dont see why there has to be such uniformity and for a billion people from many different cultures it's just not realistically possible. AND it's not desirable. Firstly, who would want to live in such a society made up of automatons with no individuality and secondly it's a perfect recipe for any society to fail in the modern multicultural world where progress is through imagination and creativity. I think much of it has to do with education. During Zia ul Haq's time the school curriculum was transformed into an extreme version of Islam and now we have people involved in violence who have gone though that curriculum (still our younger generation is...nd we should realize it). I remember the issue of Islamiat took place in one region and shias and sunnis killed each other just because the Islmait has sunni/shai content. We never realized we are muslims. Once we became weakened internally then external forces acted upon use and imposed their version of Islam on us. Thirdly, there is lack of centrality in Muslim leadership. Every religious leader (so called mullas) follow their interpretation of Islam so rigidly that they are just not ready to accept any others point of view.

Muslim are butchering each other on the name of Islam….what a shameful history we are making. We always believed that Islam is a peaceful religion and spreads love for all mankind. Our Prophet (peace be on him) was and is Rehmat-ul-Ameen but what are we experiencing is sectarian madness in the Islamic world which is the creation of some ignorant theocrats on both sides who wish to use guns to settle their differences. Islam is a religion of reasoning and logic which does not require gun to convert people to true Islam. In modern world, countries do not invade neighboring countries for the spread of Islam but are becoming friendly and respect each other borders. Killing of Muslims by Muslims does not make any sense while living in one or same country or area. There is a lesson to be learnt from the above. Had we kept the religion out, we would have come up peaceful decent people.

Its a brilliant article!! Somewhere someone must understand the solution lies in introspection and not putting the blame on others. Someone must take greater responsibility to take strong action but the problem is even that is not encouraged in Islam or by so called it patriarchs. Before it self destructs itself the people themselves should come out and fight an all out battle. Muslims in India, Malaysia or Indonesia can be a great example who kind of not only accept other ways of life but are more secular and open minded and that is the reason they are untouched by the hatred towards others. Respect of life and humanity should be paramount not the religion. Religion must work for the people and not the otherwise.

I submit for your consideration the following: I am a muslim and a member of a particular sect because I was born in a muslim family that followed this particular faith. if I was born in family who practiced a different faith I would be a faithful member of that religion / sect. If I was born a Christian or a Jew or a Hindu, in all likely hood I would be a member of that religion today. The fact is that very few people change their religion. This is just the way we have been programmed.

Therefore God, perhaps will not use one's adherence to a particular religion or sect as a criterion for salvation. The criterion has to be cross religious in order to be fair.

Every religion has two aspects; first a set of rules that govern the relationships between fellow humans and, second a set of beliefs that make an attempt to describe our relationship to our creator.

The first set of rules are by and large very similar across religions and good people in one religion who follow these rules would probably act very similarly to those from another religion.

The second set of beliefs are different from one religion to another. But God says very clearly in the Quran that He will tell us about the correctness or incorrectness of our beliefs when we are gathered together in front of him on the day of judgment. I am of the view that First: we need to follow the teaching of our respective religion to the best of our ability as far as our code of conduct in this world is concerned. Second we will be judged by how well we do so. - So to say the exam paper will be set from the course work we were taught in class, to use a familiar analogy. As far as the question of our beliefs with regard to our creator are concerned we should leave the judgment on this to our creator. Perhaps he will forgive us for our short comings. As a muslim I am taught believe in One God and I should follow this concept and will be tested on this. A member of another religion will follow his own beliefs.I should not judge him/ her even though I may feel that they are wrong. This power resides with God alone. I think if we follow this code of ethics then a lot of strife that is based on religion will go away. I do not think this concept goes against Islam or for that matter against any other religion. **The basic point is that we cannot appoint ourselves as a judge and executioner on issues of faith and relationships with our

Dear Murtaza

Another great article. My dad was visiting us in Canada couple of years ago and said:

There is more Islam here in Canada than Muslims and there are more Muslims in Pakistan and less Islam.

Huqooq ul Ibad (Rights owed to fellow men or humanity) taught in Islam are never followed in the Muslim countries and by Muslims in general. We just like to just follow Huqooq ul Allah (Rights of Allah—such as prayers, fasting, etc) and think that its enough. Muslims must strive to be the best human beings as Allah has asked us to be which requires us to full fill our obligations towards other human beings.

What we, Muslims, have neglected to do is to oppose this hatred and violence being committed by fellow Muslims and its high time that we do that - by all means.

So for all the people asking Murtaza for what is the solution to this problem. I have a simple answer:

Oppose this violence by denouncing in public, social networks, private discussions, in Masajids etc.

Lets not find external reasons for this violence. Lets nip the intolerance in the bud by teaching our children to be all inclusive.

Well my dear i would have without any doubt agreed with what you said but saying that why muslim kills muslim. In the first place Islam has no place for a person who is in guilt of killing another innocent person, so the dialogue is simple but people make it complicated. Those who kill others are not Muslims and talking about scapegoating then yes the western powers are igniting the situations as in turkey where Erdogen has prevented drinking of wine which I think is a good act while the international media has launched a great campaign against it and American societies are supporting them.I guess there lies some doubt

@El Cid: Hate to disappoint to you but there is no grand conspiracy against Islam. Those suicide bombers whom you justify were not killing foreign diplomats but directly targeting innocent muslim school girls. Those evil drones, as illegal they might be, do not target innocent civilians but known terrorists and militants. You and other so called defenders of Islam are not fighting the West, India, or other religions. You are only fighting your inner demons, your intolerance towards a secular and tolerant society. Your inability to accept change and the way of the future. It's no rocket science. You can study grade-level science, but that does not prove any conspiracies you may have about elections or the world in general. As a Pakistani, I and many other like me, do not want your Islam, leave us alone and go practice your religion in your own home or the mosque. And let us practice what we choose or not practice anything at all if we choose to. Please publish, thanks.

dear Murtaza,

I read the article in its entire length, indeed its painful to read such news about suicide or otherwise bomb blasts that kills innocent people, be it in Pak or India or Iraq or anywhere else, notwithstanding its carried out by Muslims or non-Muslims. The agony, pain and miseries are same. God knows how long we will live and die everyday like this, or to say we in Pakistan live to die another day.

Please help me in understanding; why such conflicts, blasts, suicide blasts which whenever, anywhere happens in Pakistan are related to Islam and its belief and its teachings ?. Just because Muslims are doing this against other Muslims .. ? Whereas, Muslims have fought so many battles in the past but those battles/ wars/ skirmishes were not seen as an instrument or direct threat to Muslim's beliefs and Islamic teachings ? Then why such killings are treated as anti to our Islamic beliefs, now ?. Why our beliefs and commitment to our religion is being questioned by our very own Muslims ?.

Why not same is not resonated about other religions, with same intensity when such bombings, blasts, massive killings take place in other countries, and same are not tagged with Christians, Hindus or any other religion's beliefs and their ideology or teachings ?. Why Islam always with its belief and teachings is blamed for such heinous crimes, and that too at the expense of carrier's beliefs and lives, altogether.

Or may be I have misunderstood your message, nevertheless, pleased to hear.

kind regards, Ailly (UAE).

Islamic social order was a better social order then the prevailing social orders existing in the 7th. Century. For several Centuries it remained better then the others. However the natural decay in Islamic social order, and the natural evolution of other social orders has left the Islamic countries handicapped.

The people who are trying to retain the values and culture of an outdated social order are unaware of the advantages of existing better social orders. Most Muslims are confused and can't decide how to manage this crisis. To come out of this crises Muslims need a clear understanding of the components required for a better social order and reject outdated culture and values with firm conviction.

Murtaza Haider, respect!! It's hard to ask such hard truths of yourself, more-so on a national-news website!

There are lot of people who say terrorists have no religion. While that is correct, but one can't simply turn away from the evidence, that there is more such violence perpetrated in the name of Islam. What gives?

In India, we had caste system, which took the country down for decades. We finally had the courage to admit how it was divisive and then remove it for good. The muslim youth too have to face the fact that there is no place for extremist views or identities which are only based on religion and nothing else.

The writer is asking the answer to why Islam is at war with itself. There are so many blogs that are expressing their views to this question. I say this- Islam is at war is, because Islam is at wars "by" itself. Look at the genesis of Islam- how it started. Jung-e-badr, culminating in 2 other wars and numerous wars since then. Don't have to go far behind in the history. Just see what Pakistan is doing to itself, a country created in the name of religion. America, Isreal or India does not have to destroy Pakistan, it is doing it for them.

someone from somewhere
Jun 18, 2013 10:29pm

The problem with this particular religion is it is based on control of its followers. Religion should be a guiding philosophy for life and hence should be for liberation of soul eventually. It should never be based on control to tell some one do this and not do this. That is for low level beings. This particular religion has been hijacked by some people who are primarily interested in looting, spreading hatred for selfish purpose, seize freedom & liberty and control of thought process of the society many centuries ago and their followers are following the same principle. You can say to some one that this religion prescribes that this particular entity is the supreme being and you are welcome to believe in this. You should never be allowed to proscribe that this is the only entity possible and any other entity counter to this entity will never be allowed to exist and anybody following the counter entity will be annihilated. This is the nub of the issue with this particular religion. It is always my way or highway. When they are in majority no co-existence is possible.

Now the adherents of this particular religion don't tell me that I am generalizing everyone belonging to this faith. If your co-religionists hijack your religion to inflict evil upon others and you remained silent then you have no right to complain when the same evil is inflicted on you. An act of injustice is the same if done to you or others. I can quote a number of instances from the history of Indian sub-continent when people advocating to be proponents of this particular religion some of whose names are eulogized by people of your country have inflicted untold evil upon innocent people in the name of religion. Bottom line any religion based on control of society and at the expense of individual liberty can not survive that will be case with this religion.

The answer to your question, "Why is that the belief in Islam is not sufficient to prevent violence amongst Muslims?" is fairly simple and straight forward. Muslim majority of today are not practicing Islam. What you percieve to be Islam is in fact a distorted image of what we think the true religion is. Pick up the Quran and see this for yourself. Compare the practice of muslims today with those of the past and you will see a startling difference. Why is it that a few thousand ruled over much of the Arabian peninsula and later most of the world. Today our numbers exceed a billion and yet the most shed blood is of the muslim. Those who say "Array choriye jee, hum Abu Bakr, Umar (RA) jaisay to nahi hosaktay", yes you are very right but don't sully the name of this religion based on your own inadequate understanding of the religion and its practicies. Calling yourself Muhmmad, growing a beard and wearing simple clothes can give you an appealing look but you know that none of it matters when you cannot walk the talk. The injustice, oppresion of the weak, indecency, making haram halaal and vice versa and then we dare to ask the question about being in this dire state. Name one place on the face of this planet where Islam is being practiced in its entirety and this is not a question.

@Imran: Good analytical answer! As to why the bloodshed all over the world (not only in the Muslim world) one needs to go to Allah's conversation when He the almighty decided to create human beings. The entire written human history shows that most of the time the human were fighting each other instead of living in peace. Quran clearly says that killing an innocent human is tantamount to killing the entire humanity. The Prophet declared the blood of fellow Muslims as haram. So, in my humble view it would be much better to say that Muslims are at war with each other due to their deviation from the true Islam.

Shia Sunni divide needs to be understood in the context of how Iran was Islamized. Persia (Iran) was much more progressive and culturally evolved than Arabs because of interaction with India. Iran was Arabized in mere 40 years by darbari diktats, e.g. no Non-Muslim can own any possessions including wives. Shia is a response of Iran to preserve original Persian culture. Assyrian people of Syria were also more advanced than Bedouin Arabs. War and violence between Islamic sects is actually a fight of natives against Arabization.

@ Latif Khan: You rightly said “Muslim are butchering each other on the name of Islam….what a shameful history we are making. “ The fact is Muslims started to butcher each other in the name of Islam soon after the Holy Prophet died. They split the Muslim Ummah in two groups, Shiah and Sunni despite the command of Allah in the Holy Quran to forbid Muslims in splitting in groups or sects in the following verse:

"As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou has no part in them in the least...." (6:159).

Over the last 1400 years the Muslims have continued to disobey the command of Allah and divided themselves into Sunni, Shia, Ahle-Hadith, Ahle-Fiqah, Ahle-Quran, Hanfi, Shafi, Malki, Hanbli, Wahabee, Deobandi, Barailwi and many more propagating mindless hate between these sects. Every sect is led by a Mullah, Aalim, Holy Man who is supposed to know the commands of Allah in the Holy Quran yet disobeying the command of Allah. This sectarianism has taken millions of innocent lives over 1400 years. Let us not blame Islam for it. It is Muslims who are no longer following Islam.

May Allah forgive me if I said anything wrong.

So, what you are saying is that Muslims should have fought non muslims and that would have been a right thing uh? The question you should be asking is that why there is so much violence involving muslims? It doesn't matter if they fight fellow muslims or non-muslims! You should understand that europeans never fought each other based on religions grounds. So, drawing a parallel is a joke. If your concern is violence in muslim countries, then you should be focussing your attention on the holy book and the mullahs that preach its contents ditto . There is something wrong in the book or its interoperation. It could be just that the religion in incompatible with the modern world. Or else explain to me why, muslims in general are violent regardless of their diverse cultural backgrounds? Why is that balinese (who are hindus) are peace loving while their islamic brothers are so violent in Indonesia (I mean they have a same cultural background but different faiths). Similar things in Nigeria between peace loving christians and hate mongering muslims (read Boko Haram), hindu Kashmiri pandits and violent muslim kashimiris and so on. Are you not baffled that the peace loving Westerners become all of a sudden radicals and violent when they convert into Islam? Why is that? Mr. Murtaza, you do not need to go elsewhere to find the answers, everything you want is in that book the radical muslims follow blindly! Start questioning the contents of that book and you will find answers. I do not believe in that book or any book and yet I live peacefully. Do you really need one to live peacefully?

No doubt the behavior of Muslims is contrary to the teachings of Quran and Hadis. Unfortunately, this inter-muslims fratricide started in 680- which established the precedence of violence for gains. Violence has become a tool for gaining power and may be money. The root cause of this hideous behavior is wrong education with total emphasis on rituals- namaz, roza and hajj. Good values like cooperation, tolerance, fairness, compassion and kindness are ignored. I can't cite a single example where the self proclaimed religious leaders organized rallies against injustice, poor health services, bad schools, ill treatment of poor, etc. These things don't matter. These religious leadersinflame the passions and preach hate and violence. As Irish poet, WB Yeats said " the wicked are full of passionate intensity and the moderate lack any conviction". There is no countervailing force to minimize the damage the religious types are inflicting on Muslims and Islam. The problem is compounded by the lack of secular leader of high stature who can persuade the people to be tolerant and peaceful. Backwardness in science also retard reasoning in public discourse and give prominence to passions.

Where does the Glorious Qur'an prescribe savagery and death by the sword? Please help me and cite these pasages...unless you are writing your own version and copying and taking cues from the message of the Holy Bible and the B' Gita where such slaughter is the way to Nirvana and Dharma!

The Noble Qur'an is the only scripture that forbids slaughter of non combatants and allows killing only in strict self defense. All other religions, non-religions, Atheists, and cults advocate and practice the slaughter and annihilation, even the total extermination, of the 'Other'.

Nor does my boyfriend and he is agnostic. Nor does my mum, who is quite spiritual. Nor do any of my friends, most of who are hardly religious.

You are underestimating the power of human mind, by saying we need religion to fight animal instincts. Love, compassion etc. are emotions that humans have always had.

Some people say that their religion is superior to other religion. Their religion is the true religion. I just laugh at such talk. When an earthquake strikes it kill and injure people from all religions equally. Why it does not spare people of superior religion? Similarly floods, typhoons and other natural calamities do not spare people of superior religion.why? Sun sustains life on earth and it gives required light, heat and energy to everyone irrespective of their religion. Oxygen is created for everyone to breath. If an object strikes earth it may wipe all human beings on this earth irrespective of their religion, as happened when dinosaurs were wiped of the earth. All these only indicate that all religions are man made. God has made everyone equal with same colour of blood. I don't understand why people keep on fighting and killing each other. Our earth's life is limited. It may be for few years or for few billion years(when sun will exhaust its fuel and burst with such a blast that will destroy every thing in our solar system). So why not come out of your fake ego and be greateful for everything we have.

"Do not let your hatred of a people incite you to aggression."Al- Quran 5:2

"And do not let ill-will towards any folk incite you so that you swerve from dealing justly. Be just; that is nearest to heedfulness" Al- Quran 5:8

“Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in God hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And God heareth and knoweth all things.” Al- Quran 2:256

“O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of God is (he who is) the most righteous of you. Whatever is the reason for killing, revenge, grudge, ethnic or sectarian in the name of Islam of innocent human beings is wrong. Is it written in Quran, what chapter and how to interpret is totally dependent on what you believe, read and practice. Why people do not see god in every living being depends on these factors. Yes you have rightly pointed out the shame of contemporary Muslims, namely the murder of fellow Muslims. Also puzzling is why seemingly religious Muslims would murder other religious minorities in defiance of Allah's laws. Surely if God has granted them protection it is heresy to believe you can attack them?

Perhaps all this is because the conflicts in the Muslim world amount to a slow bleeding of the Ummah in a way that actually doesn't directly affect the loved ones of most Muslims. The Europeans prior to the 20th century had also been slowly bleeding as a result of centuries of intermittent conflict. In the 20th century however, they suffered huge trauma and massive devastation in the years up to 1950. Tens of millions died in the two world wars and no family was left untouched by tragedy. Thus their motivation for peace within their own borders was high. Mutually Assured Destruction also played a part.

African and South American Christians have seemingly not suffered such scale of trauma so you can see that they are struggling with murder and mayhem as much as the Muslims world. Mexico is a horror story to rival Pakistan and Afghanistan put together. Christian on Christian murder in Africa truly turns the stomach and is right up there with the worst atrocities that Muslims today perpetrate on each other.

For the vast majority of Muslims in the world, intra-faith murder and mayhem is something that they read about or see on TV. One can only pray that Muslims (and others like them in the world) come to their senses before they reach a point where it does reach every family.

@Imran: On one side the religion forces people to behave/live in a certain manner & on the other side do not want to take responsibility for the follower's actions. This has to move on to religion being only the guiding principle, let people choose the best out of each religion/religious books so that the decision of the follower is supreme, not the religious diktats that is sought to be imposed.

Islam is not at war with itself, it is so called Muslims who do not believe in divine principles defined in Quran & Sunnah. Quran clearly has asked the believers to practice Islam in letter & spirit without any choice, whereas today's Muslim accepts divine rule as per his wish & whims, in the name of culture, society and what not. There is no such room of such thinking in Islam.

Mr. Murtaza Haider in his article has tried to portray the woes Muslims as of Islam, whereas in reality if Muslims practice the tenants of Islam as per Quran & Sunnah, problems would be over.

Problems of most of the middle eastern countries are complex and go back animosities of hundreds of years. In Pakistan we have a democratic system now, people never gave any of the religious party any mandate, they never managed to get any significant number of votes, political class should look to actively eliminate any influence of religion from the politics.
We need to strongly enforce/protect the principle that everybody has the freedom to follow their believes, there won't be any problems.
Secular democracy is the only solution. In Pakistan the word has been confused with atheism/left/liberal/west/evil. We can learn now or wait another few hundred years

Democracy seems to be imperfectly understood, everywhere. It seems, Zulfikar Bhutto, couldn't make democracy relevant to Balochistan. They, (in Balochistan), didn't need it to be relevant, because it wasn't an issue. The army didn't need the people there to see it as relevant, either. There was no issue with India, then, also, over terrorism. The idea in India is, that the Punjabi and Sindhi Pakistani's see each other as rivals. It seems, that the political 'Establishment' in democratic Pakistan, work for the other faction. Zulfikar Bhutto had the support of the Punjabi's in the establishment. Nawaz Sharif has the support of his Sindhi counterparts, perhaps, if I am not wrong. The leaders in Balochistan, didn't know what the 'establishment', even meant, as I don't also, perhaps. What is really enviable is, that no political ideology, or person is the cause of major issues.

Ah well. A typical article. The author practically demonstrates why the situation has come to such a pass. Rather than worrying about how (and why) Muslims are killing other human beings, the author is worried about how muslims are fighting other muslims. This is quite typical of the mindset of muslims in general. one has to realise that untill and unless muslims consider behaving well with other humans as a duty (or a mark of civilisation) this situation is bound to occur. Muslims have to understand that 'it is NOT ok to kill non-muslims' (even though their religious leaders ask them to) and only then would muslims realise that 'it is not ok to kill muslims'.

El Cid

@Richard: "There are some verses in Quran which are incompatible with modern world."

Which ones? When an educated person makes such a statement it is astute to cite the reference, or else its smells of trolling mischief.

Rarely ever does a verse in the Glorious Qur'an stand alone, without its context it has little relevance. This is obvious in the original Arabic due to its rhyme rhythm and cadence, and subreference . But even in translation numbers are give so that the context can be surmised from the sequence, for the less educated. At times the context lies in another Sure and verse, elsewhere in the Noble Quran.

The Noble Scripture has to be read as a unit not 'cut and paste' to understands its context and meaning. Muslims know this. Others perhaps not. This logic is the same in science and mathematics. Equations and theory have a context, and are built brick by brick on this foundation or context.

Now if you are indeed serious...please which ones?

DT
Jun 19, 2013 02:21pm

It is a regional problem happening only in and around Pakistan and internationalising in the name of Islam by the author is his prerogative. In many Islamic coutries where the law and order is strong, genocide of a particular sect is never observed. Thus "Pakistan at war with itself" should have been the better title of this article. Once the law and order is established, this thing will also vanish. Pakistan needs top decesions at top level.

Truthful it is and but a shame. You have analyzed the situation very well. You know whenever it comes to religion, I question myself, why I am following the Islam and not any other religion? Especially after the happenings you have mentioned. In the pursuit of answer my inner asks myself, does following of Islam makes me a good, pragmatic, practical and temperate person? The answer is capital YES! So you cant blame the religion (not that you are blaming). That's what the most of the religions do. But the only problem is when the religion is used. Napoleon, if I am not wrong, once noted that religion is the easiest of tools to make fools out of masses. So you got to educate the people to make them good humans and to follow the religion in true spirit. It will take time in generations.

Real Islam and True Followers do not exist anymore. They disappeared at the assassination of Ali, the fourth caliph, when the Kingdom of Islam was taken over by Muawiyah, the son of Abu Sufyan, who established the Umayyad dynasty. Once and forever the chain of unity was broken, which lead to the establishment of various sect and different interpretation of Islam. Neither today the Islam of holy Quran is practiced nor a follower of that Quran exist.

Islam is not the problem or any other religion for that matter. We humans have been fighting with each other for centuries. Racism, ethnic cleansing, terrorism, cultural clashes, riots, et al are a byproduct of our greed. The greed to be superior than others. Greed for power and dominance. Humans in general are a destructive species, we are not only harming ourselves but also the nature around us. We are slowly turning into a cancer that plagues this earth.

I believe religion is personal and not forced. We should not try to prove our dominance over others solely based on the religion we follow. We have to stop differentiating between people by their region, religion, caste, colour, language, etc. Lets see each other for what we are... humans! Humans who want nothing more than coming home to our families and spending some quality time with our loved ones. The day a murder is just a murder and not a terrorist attack or violence against religion will be the day we see things clearly, rather than getting emotionally motivated to defend criminals purely based on their religion.

Murtaza Haider PhD, finds nothing strange or suspicious that Muslims started killing Muslims after 9-11. The massive assault on Muslim lands, the brutalization of their family structure and the savage destruction and occupation of their otherwise peaceful co-existence before that date seems not have mattered to this researcher. Specially problematic since the President of the United States publicly declared a Crusade against Islam...because “God told me to do it”. “So I did”...!!!

Had the Noble Qur'an not stressed equity and benign coexistence than the thousand years of Islam's absolute reign in Southern Europe and another thousand years in the Subcontinent of India, and 1400years in the Middle East would have completely and totally eradicated the local culture and exterminated the native religions, culture, and populations...as those who tout modern democracy did in the continents of North and South America, and Australia. And attempted to do in Africa. And as the Hindu has been doing to the Muslim and Sikh populations in Kashmir, Khalsitan and Bharat for the past sixty years.

I suspect that in this article it is not the scholar speaking but the misplaced parochial anger of the man.

We need to change our own thinking and that of others. To do so we need to engage in meaningful dialogue and debates. We need to accept some uncomfortable truths and be totally honest and factual to ourselves.

@Hamayun: Why should anyone ban drinking? If a muslim is true to himself and to his religon then he will not consume Alcohol even if it is availible. If he is not a true believer and wants to drink then why stop him. Does Islam not say that we should not use force - rather use our own example of a role model to lead people to goodness?

@Ramesh Mehta: Perhaps it is your ignorance and obvious biases that are preventing you from finding answers to it. My experience so far is that Indians (of Hindu faith) have the worst biases against minorities especially Muslims. No matter how bad it is here, I would rather be in Pakistan then in India. Enough said.

@Confused: You are not the only "confused" person. Actually every nation of this world is fighting every other nation. Every army is prepared to attack at the shortest possible notice to any other nation. That is why there should be a balance of power. Even those countries, which appears to be united or friendly are fully at watch against each others. Nations acts differently than individuals. If you keep the door open, and in addition to this have no watch dog over your internal groups (sects, tribe, criminals, religious groups,, etc.), they will try to ruin each other and foreign elements would certainly take advantages of this. So, there should be no compromise with sectarianism with in a country, only then we can stop outsiders to take advantages of this. Pakistan must immediately banned all religious activities by all groups in public. Freedom of practicing one's religion must be a private matter of every citizen and its manifestation in public should be limited to mosques, churches, temples. Hate speeches should be declared a punishable crime. Carrying arms, having possession of explosive must be punished by death sentences, etc. Our rulers must have courage to take clear and practical actions and must stop being confused..

The real issue is the Shia and Sunni conflict. The Shias backed by Iran and some in Lebanon, and Sunnis -- supported and aided by Saudi Arabia. the Middle East-- place where many religions existed before have been systematically cleaned. Smaller religions have been pushed to extinction or they have been driven out. The parsees of Iran, the Druze and Moronites are a few examples. In Pakistan the Ahmedis are not considered muslims and are being persecuted. On a broder classification it is war between Shias and Sunnis who do not consider eachother as muslims. The are being funded by petro-dollar rich countries.

@Danish A.: “Hate to disappoint to you but there is no grand conspiracy against Islam”.

Thank you for assuring me of that. Perhaps the President of the US did not mean any thing when he said: “This is a Crusade. God told me to attack them. And I did”. [Verifiable on public record]. And launching armadas, air forces and military boots into Muslim countries, from thirty seven western nations, and devastated them...

.

Danish A: “As a Pakistani, I and many other like me, do not want your Islam, leave us alone”

Where did I say that “I have a Islam” and that “you should follow it”? I never said anything of the sort. I go by the Glorious Qur'an which categorically states that “To you your religion. To me my religion”

Please do not attribute statements to me that I never made. I have NO interest in you and the faith you may follow or not follow. Your religion is NOT my concern, not my business. I have not Imposed anything on you. I simply presented an analysis to the writer. You have not faulted that...unless you deny that ALL Muslim countries have foreign Military presence in their land and Muslim countries are being reduced to the stone age by them.

“So I did”.

Had not the Noble Qur'an not stressed equity and benign coexistence than the thousand years of Islam's absolute reign in Southern Europe and another thousand years in the Subcontinent of India would have completely eradicated the local cultures and exterminated the native populations as those who tout modern democracy did in the continents of North and South America, and Australia. And attempted to do in Africa.

I suspect that in this article it is not the scholar speaking but the misplaced parochial anger of the man.

"Unholy men wage holy wars" summarize the mind set of war mongers very well, though the title is misleading. It is not 'The Islam"a cause of violence among Muslims, but the lust and desire to be at the helm of affairs by creating chaos among Muslims in the name of righteousness. It is good ploy to make Muslims weak and then exploit them.I wish that these so called holy men understand it..

It is time for Islam to reform. No, this does not mean a return to the 7th century. It is the only "religion" that allows for the killing of apostates that leave the faith, guarantees paradise only if one dies in jihad and permits the maltreatment of " infidels". With a non-chronological book buttressed with tens of thousands of hadiths (with glaring contradictions) it is no wonder that abuse happens at all levels, domestic to political. It is a faith forged in fear and blood. The world awaits an 'Islamic' Dalai Lama, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr or Mandela to rise up and demand religious reform from within. Till that happens the medieval carnage will continue. The 3D reflexive response of Denial, Delusion and Deflection so common in the Muslim world, does not fool anyone. Time to be humble, confess/address all homegrown ills and change for the better. This will earn both heavenly and earthly respect.

@ahsen :

When we say "Islam," we include the written down beliefs and the believers. Without believers there will be no religion. It will be like one hand clapping. Another problem that Mr. Haider did not address is the slew of irreconcilable contradictions in the holy book as well as in the faith's 1,400 year history. One can cherry pick whayever you want to present your point of view. Sll another problem with Islam and all other religions that depend on the written word is the "meaning" inherent in the language and as we know languages evolve and meanings change. Hence, different interpretations arise often pitting one group against another as has been happening within Islam and between Ilam and other faiths. If God could only have microcodes within the brains and hearts of all living (and non living) beings one set of instructuions . . . .

Similar questions were asked before. Why Bedouin tribes are fighting among themselves, why not become one and attack Kuffar Persian (Iranian). So they did and converted Persia in forty years. These days even oil reach country Iran cannot make each Iranian computer literate in forty years but all Iranians were spiritually cleansed and booked their room in the Jannat in merely forty years. Bravo! Similar cleansing happened in Egypt and Syria. China was saved because Indian Jahil Kuffar did not book his room in Jannat enmass. Even in 1947 merely 14% of the Indian subcontinent (Present day India, Pakistan , Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Burma & Bhutan) were in the business of booking room in Jannat and date with Houries. Otherwise it was the turn of Chinese; and in 1949, even with 90% Jannat seeking population Xinjiang (Ughir) remained part of China.

I didn't try to read the full article after reading the first paragraph. The writer must be asked as to who is stagging the destruction in Syria and Pakistan. Who is funding these terrorists who are causing this terrorism. I am not saying that Muslims have the highest level of Moral values but it is clear that there are games being played by the west in Syria and Pakistan' Baluchistan. The writer needs to broad his mind to look beyond the current picture of Muslims and should also tell the world what is being done to bring Muslims in current state of mind.

Read...And while the Muslim on Muslim violence is claiming victims all over Pakistan, the violence against non-Muslims, including Hindus and Christians, often brings together Muslims of different stripes, who would otherwise be fighting each other, in attacking religious minorities... It is hopeless for Muslims to expect peace and prosperity if the slaughtering of minorities belonging to other worldly religions is their only hope of peace and unity. The world is waking up to this fact and soon they will plan and take necessary steps. It is sad and a shame as the poor continue to suffer in the Muslim world without a say. Religion of peace, where, when and how? Is the question.

The last paragraph is about the only worthwhile thing in this article. The rest is a mere collection of facts without there context. If it was a matter of sectarianism only - it would have been resolved in one of the opposing extremes.

But still that does not shift the blame from those responsible but adds responsibility to those who are not ready to take it up.

I salute Mr. Haider for writing this article which has been on my mind for the past ten years. I am not a Muslim, have not read Holy Quran, but have several educated Muslim friends and relatives. I have posed this question to them several times but never received a clear answer. The only logical explanation that appears is that Islam is interpreted by a person as he/she pleases. Since it started as a violent religion, converted people by sword, no tolerance for non-believers, so each person decides the action to be taken toward other person. Islam is loosing the war against other religions especially christianity . The only way Islam will be respected by non-believers if Muslims become more tolerant not only towards other religions but also accept different sections of beliefs within Islam.
