KARACHI, May 13: More than 100 per cent votes were cast in at least 10 polling stations falling in nine National Assembly constituencies across Sindh during the May 11 elections, says a report of a non-governmental organisation monitoring polls released on Monday.

The report, compiled by the Free and Fair Election Network, shows that the constituencies in which more than 100pc voting was detected by the NGO are won by the two most popular parties of the province — the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement — one in the rural areas and the other in the urban centres of Sindh.

The report shows the names of the winners of only three constituencies while the results from the rest of the six constituencies were awaited when the report was compiled.

The most prominent among the lucky winners in whose constituencies more than 100pc votes were cast at certain polling stations is PPPP president Makhdoom Mohammad Amin Fahim while another such lucky person is his party fellow from Ghotki district, Ali Gohar Mahar.

A candidate from the urban areas who managed to receive more votes than the registered ones at certain polling stations is the MQM’s Sajid Ahmed.Amin Fahim was contesting NA-218 and on the polling station (combined) No 226, where both male and female voters came to vote, the total number of voters registered was 803 whereas 888 ballots were cast there, showing a turnout rate of 110.59pc.

Similarly the PPP’s Ali Gohar Mahar was contesting NA-200, and 833 male voters were registered at its polling station No 1, but 876 ballots were cast, making the turnout 105.16pc.

The third such person is the MQM’s Sajid Ahmed, contesting NA-257, where 828 male and females voters were registered at polling station No 129, but 1,210 ballots were cast, showing a turnout of 146.14pc.

The report shows that in constituency NA-211, results from which are awaited, 491 male and female voters were registered at polling station No 86 but 982 ballots were cast, making the turnout 200pc.

In NA-242, 1,349 female votes were registered at its polling station No 80, where the voters cast 2,508 ballots, making the voter turnout 185.92pc. In NA-226, results of which are awaited, 752 male and female votes were registered at its polling station No 132, but 1,068 ballots were cast there, 142.02pc of the registered voters.

The number of registered male and female voters at polling station No 229 of NA-229, result of which is awaited, is 709 but 896 ballots were cast there, making the voter turnout 126.38pc.

At NA-217’s polling station No 3, 1,161 votes were registered but 1,254 ballots were cast, making the voter turnout 108pc. Similarly, the number of registered male and female voters at polling station No 63 of NA-256 was 2,405 but 2,495 ballots were cast there, making the voter turnout 103.74pc, says the report.

The report says that the NGO had posted its observers at 8,119 polling stations all over the country during the general elections and in at least 49 polling stations the voter turnout was more than 100pc, putting a question mark against the transparency of the whole exercise.
