KARACHI, Oct 4: An anti-terrorism court remanded on Thursday 27 suspects in prison in a case pertaining to acts of violence during rallies taken out in protest against an anti-Islam film made in the United States.

The suspects were booked for allegedly rioting, attacking policemen and destroying public and private property during Sept 21 rallies within the remit of the Boat Basin police station.

The suspects remained in police custody for around 10 days and after the expiry of their remand, the investigating officers produced them in the anti-terrorism court-III.

The judge, Ghulam Mustafa Memon, of the ATC-III sent them in jail custody on judicial remand and directed the IOs to submit final investigation reports on Oct 8.

The Boat Basin police arrested 27 suspects for allegedly committing offences between the Bilawal traffic intersection and the Boat Basin roundabout.

The case (FIR No. 475/12) was registered under Sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon),

149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 324 (attempted murder), 353 (criminal assault to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage, etc) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act at the Boat Basin police station.

Meanwhile, the court handed over two recently arrested suspects to the Kharadar police on physical remand till Oct 12.

Around 50 other suspects facing similar charges are also in custody of the Nabi Bux, the Preedy and the Kharadar police stations on physical remand.

The police are likely to produce them in court on Friday.

Policemen remanded

The same court remanded on Thursday three suspects in jail custody in a policeman murder case.

Constables Rajab Ali and Intizar Ali and a civilian suspect, Mohammad Zeeshan, along with their absconding accomplices have been booked for allegedly killing ASI Syed Mohsin Ali Jaffari on Sept 4 within the remit of the Brigade police station.

After the expiry of their physical remand, the investigating officer again produced the suspects before the ATC-III and the court sent them to prison on judicial remand till Oct 12 and directed the IO to submit a charge-sheet.

A case (FIR No.232/12) was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder), 109 (abetment) and 34 (common intention) of the PPC.

The prosecution said that the deceased was a key witness in the murder case of the then SHO of the Brigade police station, inspector Nasir-ul-Hasan, who along with his guard was gunned down in an ambush in Lines Area on July 2, 2010.
