LAHORE: The Shadman police have registered a case against six manufacturers in connection with the deaths of scores of patients who had used medicines given by the Punjab Institute of Cardiology.

The Punjab government also constituted an investigation team led by DIG Mubashirullah to probe the case.

DIG (Operations) Ghulam Mehmood Dogar told Dawn that the case (47/12) had been registered under Section 322 (Punishment for qatl bis-sabab) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Ichhra circle DSP Abid Pehalwan.

He said the State said in the application that the reaction of medicines manufactured by six pharmaceutical companies had led to the death of scores of patients so action must be taken against them.

The DIG said it would be probed during the investigation whether one or more medicines caused deaths.

He said it would also be determined if the medicines were tampered with, stockists did mixing in the medicines or any other negligence or criminal act led to deaths.
