Man hangs himself

RAWALPINDI, Jan 11: A man committed suicide while another attempted to kill himself here on Wednesday, police said.Haji Mohammad Riaz, 71, a resident of Waris Khan, was found hanging with a rope tied to the ceiling fan of his room by his son-in-law who had come to see him. The deceased lived alone as his two sons were settled abroad.

Quoting the victim’s son-in-law, the police said Mr Riaz was a heart patient and had been in distress over his prolonged ailment. This might have driven him to commit suicide. No suicide note was found from his room, the police said.

In another incident, Mohammad Jamil Sharif was brought to Benazir Bhutto Hospital in critical condition after he took an overdose of pills.

Police said Jamil had gone to the house of his in-laws in Westridge to talk to his angry wife who had left his house after quarreling with him over some domestic issue and was living with her parents.

When he failed to resolve the dispute, he attempted suicide by taking pills. — Staff Reporter

CHAKWAL, Jan 11: A man was killed in a truck-trailer collision on Motorway, police said on Wednesday.

Mohammad Iqbal told Kallar Kahar police that he was traveling on his truck being driven by his driver, Khalil Butt, when a trailer of Pakistan Army recklessly driven by sepoy Nisar Ahmed collided with his truck in the Salt Range area.

As a result of the collision, the truck fell into a ravine and driver, Khalil Butt, a resident of Chiniot died on the spot while his friend Jahngir Ahmed sustained serious injuries.

Police officials told Dawn that a case had been registered against sepoy Nisar Ahmed belonging to Light Supply and Transport Unit of Choonian Cantonment. — Correspondent

Son shoots mother

ATTOCK, Jan 11:  A woman was shot injured by her son over a family dispute in Nartupa village of Hazro police station.  Police said on Wednesday that Nasreen Bibi reported to the police that she had some dispute with her husband, Tufail Khan.

Last night, she had an exchange of hot words with her husband and demanded divorce from him. At this, her son, Wasiq Khan, got infuriated and fired at her with a pistol. She said that her son attacked her on the abetment of her husband.

Later, both father and son escaped from the scene. She sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the THQ hospital. — Correspondent

Distillery unearthed

TAXILA, Jan 11: The police on Wednesday unearthed a distillery, arrested its owner and recovered huge quantity of locally-made liquor.

The sources said that the police party, acting on a tip-off, raided the distillery being run by Shafqat Zaman at Jameelabad and recovered 160 litres of liquor.

While in another incident, police arrested a proclaimed offender after a brief shootout in Mohra Maradu area.

The sources said that proclaimed offender, Munsab Khan, wanted in a murder case was arrested as a police party raided his hide out in the mountainous area. — Correspondent

Traditional sports event

TAXILA, Jan 11:  Traditional sports event at union council level would be organised in tehsil Hassanabdal on Jan 16. District sports officer, Sheikh Mohammad Asif, while talking to newsmen on Wednesday said that registration of the participating teams would be free of cost.

He said inter-college sports would also be organised on Jan 28. — Correspondent

Residents voice concern

ATTOCK, Jan 11: The residents have raised multiple complaints against the performance of police in an open meeting of district police officer (DPO) Dr Mohammad Akhtar Abbas held at TMA Pindigheb on Wednesday.

Besides the local notables and police officials, the sub divisional police officer Pindigheb circle and SHOs of the local police stations were also present on the occasion. During the meeting, a local social figure Sheraz Khan of Akhlaz village complained that police officials were supporting criminals and particularly head Constable Mohammad Javed was minting money from the people and receiving bribe from the outlaws instead of provision of security to the public.

Taking action, the DPO suspended head constable Javed and asked him to report district police line till further orders. Such as, Malik Mushtaq complained that he recently returned to home town from USA after 30 years, but there was no change in the traditional police culture as people are being manhandled at the police stations. Many of residents also raised concern over the unchecked functioning of drug and gambling dens with the alleged connivance of the local police particularly at the Khor area.  — Correspondent
