KARACHI, Dec 26: A young man who had allegedly thrown acid on two girls within the remit of the Surjani Town police station on Sunday night was arrested by police on Monday.

Police said the man reportedly tried to avenge on one of the girls who had rejected his proposal. He missed the target and instead hurt the other girl more gravely.

Police said the incident took place in Sector 5-D, where a man knocked at the door of a house and when the door was opened by Erum, he threw acid and fled.

Police said Erum, daughter of Noor Muhammad, and Zareen, daughter of Zahid, were present in the doorway when the acid was thrown towards them.

Both girls suffered burns. They were taken to the burns ward of the Civil Hospital Karachi, where Erum was admitted for treatment. She had suffered around 25 per cent burns. Zareen, with 15 to 18pc burns, rejected admission to the hospital and went home after initial treatment, police said.

Police said Zareen was a former neighbour of Erum, and had recently shifted to Ayub Goth, located near Sector 5-D of Surjani Town.

Police, quoting Zareen’s grandfather, Islamuddin, said the girl and her grandfather had gone to Sector 5-D. They were walking back home when they realised that someone was following them. So they went into the nearby house of Erum and later the incident took place.

The area SHO said that Kamran Ali, resident of Ayub Goth, had sent a marriage proposal to Zareen, but her family turned it down.

The actual target of the attacker was Zareen, not her friend Erum, who took the brunt of the attack, while Zareen escaped with comparatively less severe injuries.

Police on Monday arrested the suspect and registered a case (FIR 716/2011) under Section 324 (attempted murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code on a complaint of Zareen.

Man shot dead A young man was shot dead at his home in Machhar Colony in what police described as a family dispute.

Ibrahim aka Badshah was shot dead at his residence situated in Muree Mohallah of the Machhar Colony, said an official at the Docks police station.

The police quoted the victim’s family as saying that his cousins, Shaukat and Liaquat, had visited him and left soon after the killing.

The victim and the attackers were associated with the fishery industry, the police said.
