Explosives recovered

ALPURI, Oct 5: Police raided a house here on Wednesday and recovered explosives and chemicals.

DPO Jehan Zeb Khan told media men that Shangla police led by SHO Mohammad Zaman raided the house of Abdul Qadir on a tip-off and recovered 94kg explosives, 23kg chemicals, 39kg fertiliser, 600-metre safety fuse and other materials.

The police also arrested the accused and started investigation. —Correspondent

Lowari tunnel

PESHAWAR, Oct 5: Jamaat-i-Islami central naib amir Sirajul Haq has expressed concern over the delay in completion of Lowari tunnel and alleged that Rs4 billion funds meant for the mega project had been diverted to Multan and Larkana.

While speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Wednesday, the JI leader warned the government to release the amount otherwise his party would soon announce a long march from Chitral to Parliament House, Islamabad, and the responsibility would rest with the government.

The JI leader said that due to non-payment of bills the construction company, Sambu, had sold the construction material and shifted its machinery from the tunnel site which was a glaring example of government’s negligence. —Bureau Report

Boy kidnapped

PESHAWAR, Oct 5: A three-year-old boy was kidnapped by unknown persons from outside his residence at Chowk Nasir Khan (Kochee Bazaar) here on Wednesday.

Complainant Zahid told Dawn that his nephew Tayyab son of Zafar Iqbal had gone to a nearby shop to buy some candies at 12 noon but did not return home.

He said that the boy’s father was a poor technician at a local hospital and had no enmity.

He appealed to the people to contact him on his cell number (03015971463) if anyone had any clue to the missing boy. —Bureau Report

Essay competition

PESHAWAR, Oct 5: The University of Peshawar held a prize distribution ceremony for the winners of an essay competition organised by the Pakistan Council of Old Religion Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, said a press release issued here on Wednesday.

UoP Vice-Chancellor Dr. Azmat Hayat, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said that it was high time that our religious scholars worked hard to create mass awareness about the true face of Islam and enlighten the youth to follow the same.

The first prize of the competition titled ‘Peace a tool for economic and social development’ was won by Mehajuddin of Bannu University. Nadeem Haider and Summaya Wasim from D.I. Khan took second and third position respectively while Ms. Mahreen of D.I. Khan and Abdul Majeed of Mansehra were given special prizes. —Bureau Report

Child protection

PESHAWAR, Oct 5: Child Protection and Welfare Commission claimed to have received 2,500 cases confronted by children out of which 1,700 were solved during the past six months.

The commission’s deputy protection officer, Ijaz Khan, in a statement on Wednesday said that the commission had provided assistance to different organisations including police.

He said that of all the children 447 were suffering from different diseases, 24 were facing police cases, violence on children cases were put at 16, sexual harassment cases 25 and child labour cases 88.

Similarly, the under age marriage cases were 25 and 594 of them were facing different psychological problems and were provided proper psychotherapy. —Bureau Report

Non-payment of salaries

BANNU, Oct 5: The employees of Municipal Town-II staged a protest demonstration here on Wednesday against the TMO and DCO over non-payment of salaries.

The enraged protesters also staged a sit-in and blocked the road for traffic in front of municipal committee building.

The protesters wearing black armbands were chanted slogans against the TMO and DCO for not releasing their salaries.

They boycotted their duties and said that tubewells of the city will also remain shut for three days as a mark of protest. They also refused to collect garbage from the streets. —Correspondent

Man, woman shot dead

CHARSADDA, Oct 5: A man and a woman were gunned down in an honour-related case in Kaptan Korona Town here on Wednesday.

Mother of the deceased Khan Zali of Pabbi Nowshera reported to police that her son and wife of Fazal Akbar went missing from Kaptan Korona last Sunday.

The accused, Fazal Akbar, and his relatives brought Khan Zali and the woman on the pretext of reconciliation. However, sons of Ali Akbar including Fazal Akber, Anaray and Inzaray opened fire killing the woman on the spot and critically injuring Khan Zali who later died at a local hospital.

Police have registered a case and started investigation. — Correspondent
