LANDI KOTAL/WANA, Sept 7: A band of militants last night finished the job of destroying completely a government school in Bara tehsil that had survived partially their last attack on the building.

Sources in the area said that about 12 militants arrived at half-destroyed school building in Alamgudar area of Sipah around midnight, planted explosives at the portion still standing and lit up the fuse.

The huge explosion that followed was heard far and wide. The sources said that militants had targeted the same school some two months ago.

Educational institutions in most parts of Bara are closed since September 2009 when an army operation was launched against various outlawed armed groups.

According to unofficial figures, militants have so far destroyed 75 government schools in Khyber Agency.

Bara political administration had issued notices to local tribal elders in August to ensure safety of the remaining government schools and other installations. It had warned the tribal elders of suspension of their perks and privileges alongside holding them responsible for destruction of official installations. But despite that militants had been targeting official buildings with regular intervals without any fear.

The meeting through a unanimous resolution demanded of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor to order immediate release of their salaries.

Meanwhile, militants bombed building of a higher secondary school for girls in Dubb Kot area of South Waziristan Agency on Tuesday night.

The residents of the area said that explosion destroyed the outer wall of the school while main building remained safe.

It is the only higher secondary school in the tribal region and over 400 girl students have been enrolled in it.
