KARACHI: Signal-free expressway

Published January 12, 2009

KARACHI, Jan 11: The city government has started work on a signal-free project to ensure smooth flow of traffic on Shaheed-i-Millat Road and Expressway from Qayyumabad to Jail Chowrangi.

Under the project, a flyover will be constructed at Baloch Colony-Mehmoodabad intersection to link the expressway with Shaheed-i-Millat Road and all traffic signals, including the one on Baloch Colony bridge, and roundabouts on the road will be removed with the construction of U-turns as alternative.

The project was approved by City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal in a meeting, which was attended by DCO Javed Hanif Khan, EDOs, representatives of a consultant firm, officials of the city government and others.

Earlier, the consultant firm’s representatives briefed participants of the meeting that traffic pressure on the expressway and Mehmoodabad intersection had increased considerable after the construction of Qayyumabad flyover. It was pointed that construction of a flyover at Mehmoodabad intersection would help ease traffic congestion.

Mr Kamal, while giving the project’s approval, said that efforts would be made to complete the project within the next four months. He also issued directives for parking arrangements in the area.—PPI
