BAHAWALPUR, Jan 7: Shopkeepers of the city’s main business hub -- Farid Gate - have resented demolition of their shops in the name of widening of Stadium Road.

About 30 shops have been razed to widen the road.

The affected shop owners said Revenue Department and TMA officials damaged their property worth hundreds of thousands of rupees for the construction of the dual road. They said they produced proprietary deeds of the disputed TMA land during a meeting with district officials, but even then their property was damaged.

They said the road could be widened from the other side, where TMA land was available for use. They demanded that the chief minister and prime minister look into the issue and compensate them against the losses.

District Officer for Revenue Ghazi Amanullah said the shops were pulled down in accordance with the city’s demarcation. He said those affected showed only PT-One forms of their properties.

LOADSHEDDING: Prolonged electricity loadshedding in the city and suburbs has made people’s lives miserable.

Routine business activities have come to a standstill. Representatives of the Bahawalpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry say there is a considerable decline in the industrial production because of the loadshedding.

Kissan Board representative Jam Hazoor Bakhsh criticised the government for its failure in regulating power supply to farmers.
