KARACHI, Jan 5: An unidentified suspect on Monday lobbed a hand-grenade into a shop in the Shershah junk market but the device did not explode. The attack, however, spread panic among the people around. Police reached the scene and called out the Bomb Disposal Unit personnel who picked and took away the device.

“The suspects riding a motorcycle lobbed the grenade into the Karachi Cables shop, forcing the people present in the shop to run to safety,” said Site SPO Rao Iqbal. He said the shop-owners did not lodge an FIR of the incident. Police suspected extortion as the possible motive for the attack, saying that the attackers wanted to intimidate the shopkeeper.

The police pointed out that the market was located near Jehanabad in Lyari where notorious gangs of Rehman Dakait and Ghaffar Zikri had been operating for long and collect extortion money from people.

Accident

Two persons were seriously injured in a road accident on the Natives Jetty Bridge on Monday.

Edhi sources said that Nazeer, 18, and Murshid, 15, were riding a motorcycle when it was hit by a hit-and-run vehicle.

The injured youths were taken to the Civil Hospital where they were admitted.
