LAHORE, Jan 4: Six-year-old Tipu Sultan lived up to his star billing when he powered his way to victory in the feature event during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Lahore Racecourse on Sunday.

It was a cloudy day which also experienced light drizzle midway through the proceedings making it a chilly afternoon. Still the races went smoothly.

Owned jointly by Munir Ahmed Dar and Syed Pervez Hussain, the bay horse was piloted by jockey Aamir Pervez and trained by Zahid Khan. A close contest was expected between the winner, filly Philogyny and colt Vendetta but it turned out to be a one-horse affair.

Tipu Sultan defeating the much talked about prodigy Philogyny by an amazing seven-and-a-half lengths’ margin. Filly Pick Of The Day finished a close third by a neck’s margin after nosing out Vendetta to a dismal fourth position.

The feature event, a class IV division I, II and III combined handicap race, was contested over 1,600 metres. The winner clocked one minute 40 2/5 seconds. This was the fourth race of the day.

The fifth and supporting event saw four-year-old bay colt Mutajir plunder his rivals to make it four wins from as many starts. He beat Nishat Malook by about three lengths in the Mardan Plate, a class five race, run over 1,200 metres.

The colt’s achievements have brought acknowledgement for his young trainer Haji Abid Mahmood’s skill. Abid joined the ranks barely two years back.

The colt owned by Atta Mohammad Khan was ridden confidently by jockey Shahid Rehman.

Bay colt Sun Downer remained prominent among the other winners of the day. The colt was trapped in an uncompromising pocket and was stretched out by riding boy Bilal Ahmed to win the third race. He beat filly Mirana Shaheen by about three lengths. Sun Downer is trained by Azhar Ali.

Ace jockey Shahid Rehman was seen at an advantage among the riders, punching home three winners in Barray Lal, Mutajir and Northern Crown. The success of Barray Lal and Northern Crown earned a double for trainer A.B. Malik.
