Protest against custodial killing

GUJRANWALA, Jan 2: The heirs to an alleged robber, who was killed by CIA police in custody, blocked GT Road along with other people of their locality by placing body of the accused on the road on Friday night.

Police took Kashif of Bakhtewala locality into custody about four days ago in connection with a robbery. The police allegedly tortured him to death during the interrogation. However, police said Kashif became unconscious when he was taken to the police station and he was taken to Lahore General Hospital, where he died from brain haemorrhage.

Police also said Kashif and his brother were wanted in heinous crimes, adding that his brother was still at large.

The heirs to Kashif refused to accept police’s claim and staged a protest on GT Road. The traffic on the road had not been restored till the filling of this report at 9pm.

KIDNAPPERS HELD: Police claimed on Friday to have arrested four kidnappers and seized a student whom they kidnapped for ransom from Malkhanwali village about one week ago.

High school student Muhammad Tayyab was on his way to home from fields when accused Khalid Abbas, Ehsanullah, Munir and Nasir kidnapped him and took him to Gujrat. They demanded Rs5 million for his release. Tayyab’s family struck a Rs900,000 deal with them and informed police before paying them the ransom amount at a place near Wazirabad.

The police raided the place where Tayyab’s family was to pay ransom to the criminals and arrested them. The police seized the ransom money and Tayyab from the kidnappers. A case has been registered against them.

Tayyab’s father Muhammad Sarwar is settled in Kuwait.

HEALTH FACILITY: An amount of Rs2.8 million has been allocated for free maternity and labour room service at the divisional headquarters hospital from Jan 5, Executive District Officer for Health Dr Nisar Cheema said at a briefing.

Cheema said the Health Department provided 70 per cent and patients’ welfare organisation 30 per cent of the above mentioned amount. He said all costs relating to normal deliveries and major operations would be borne by the hospital administration. He said a poor female patient would inaugurate the free labour room service at the hospital on Monday.

GAS TARIFF: The Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) opposed an increase in gas tariff for domestic and commercial consumers and described the move as a bad omen for the industry.

A meeting here on Friday with GCCI President Muhammad Akram Badshah in the chair said that industry’s foundations had already been weakened by an increase in power and gas tariff. The meeting demanded that the president and the prime minister take notice of an increase in gas prices.
