ISLAMABAD, Dec 30: Security in the federal capital has been put on high alert in the wake of Muharram, and the city administration has made special arrangements to avoid any untoward incident during mourning processions and Majalis.

This was informed in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Commissioner Islamabad Kamran Lashari here on Tuesday. The meeting reviewed the comprehensive security plan.

The meeting was attended by Inspector General of Police Syed Asghar Raza Gardezi, Deputy Commissioner Amer Ali Ahmed, Senior Superintendent of Police Ahmad Latif and representatives of intelligence agencies.

The deputy commissioner told the meeting that implementation of the security plan had already started and a control room was functioning round the clock in the office of Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Rana Akbar Hayat to coordinate and supervise the arrangements.

He said the police had been put on high alert and extra vigilance would be maintained throughout the month, especially during the first two weeks.A contingency plan is also in place and all the hospitals have been alerted, he said, adding that ambulances, fire brigade, bomb disposal squad would also travel with the processions.

The meeting was informed that magistrates and station house officers had started joint checking in their jurisdictions and were in close contact with the organisers of the processions and Majalis.

Walkthrough gates would be installed around venues of main Majalis and the processions routes would be covered by security cameras. The police and organisers of Majalis and processions would ensure that no outsider comes close to the mourners.

Checking at entry and exit points has also been intensified. The city administration has imposed a ban on wall-chalking in Islamabad and its implementation will be ensured in letter and spirit.

Organiser will observe the timings of the processions and will only pass through the designated routes.
