CONAKRY, Dec 30: The new military junta in Guinea on Tuesday named banker Kabine Komara as prime minister and met with representatives of foreign governments which condemned the coup in the mineral-rich African state.

Komara, whose nomination was announced in a statement read on national radio, is currently a senior director of the African Export-Import Bank based in Cairo.

Labour unions which spearheaded large-scale protests against deceased president Lansana Conta at the start of the year favoured Komara as prime minister, but Conte instead picked Lansana Kouyate for the job.

Military officers staged their coup hours after Conte died on Dec 22.

Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, the coup leader who now acts as president, meanwhile began a slew of meetings on Tuesday with ambassadors of the G8 countries, representatives of the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

Most foreign governments have condemned the coup and called for a democratic transition of power. The African Union on Monday suspended Guinea.—AFP
