LAHORE, Dec 29: The Lahore High Court has been moved for banning the sale of milk being supplied by different commercial corporations because “it is unfit for human consumption”.

Petitioner Dr Yaqoob Bhatti, a central executive member of the Watan Party, submitted that a city district government report had revealed 80 per cent milk supplied to older, younger and minors was poisonous and led to deaths.

According to a data provided in the report, 19,718 samples of milk were collected by the food department in the last five years and almost 17,529 samples were found adulterated.

Petitioner’s counsel through Barrister Zafarullah said that recently a similar scandal was unveiled in China in which 54,000 infants were either killed or became sick due to adulterated milk.

He said the tainted milk was being sold for the last many years in Pakistan and nobody had ever taken concrete steps to stop this menace.

This adulteration, he said, was being done to convert one kilogram of milk into four kilograms by adding melamine and water.

The petitioner prayed that after banning the sale of tainted milk the setting up of cattle colonies and milk farms near the outskirts of cities be allowed.

He further prayed that the livestock department should be directed to increase the growth of livestock and even non-meat eating days might be increased.
