KARACHI: Young man shot dead

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 27: A 28-year-old man was killed on Saturday when unknown attackers sprayed him with bullets near his residence in Ranchhore Lines, police and witnesses said.

They said that the victim, Zubair, son of Saleem, a resident of Ramasawami, died on the spot around 5.40pm and the two attackers fled.

The SP of Saddar Town, Dr Amir Shaikh, told Dawn that the victim was an idler having criminal background. “He was booked in two cases and he had also remained in jail for some time,” he added.

The SP said the victim was not affiliated with any religious or political party.

The Eidgah police said the victim was sitting at a meat-seller’s shop when two motorcyclists came there and opened fire at him.

They said the attackers used 9mm pistols in the assault as the police found nine empties at the spot.

The body was taken to the Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination. Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim had received two bullets in the upper torso from a very close range as both bullets went through the body, rupturing the victim’s heart.

The police said that a case against unknown culprits would be lodged on behalf of the state as the victim’s widowed mother and younger brother refused to lodge an FIR.

Woman falls to death

A 20-year-old woman died after she tumbled from the balcony of her fifth floor flat in Kharadar.

The body of Uzma, daughter of Mohammed Hanif, was brought to the Civil Hospital by the victim’s family who took away the body without medico-legal proceedings.

The hospital sources quoted the victim’s family as telling them that the young woman had been mentally unstable and she fell off the balcony after she lost balance.

They said the fall from the fifth floor caused multiple fractures to the victim.

They said the victim had been under psychiatric treatment at a mental hospital for the past several months.

The police said the victim’s family did not opt for medico-legal proceedings and took away the body without postmortem as they thought that the woman had fallen to death accidentally.

Suicide attempt

A 22-year-old woman, who jumped into the sea near Native’s Jetty in her attempt to commit suicide, was rescued by divers.

Chhipa Trust sources said their two divers rescued the young woman as she threw herself into the water jumping off the railing at around 10.30am.

They said the woman, identified as Azra, daughter of Sohail, was taken to the Civil Hospital for treatment.

Hospital sources said that the woman’s relatives took away her after she regained consciousness.

The victim was stated to be a resident of Jutland Lines.

Jackson police, when asked, feigned ignorance about the incident. “We got no entry from the hospital’s medico-legal section,” a police official said.

Shot and wounded

A 23-year-old man was shot at and wounded by two bandits who wanted to deprive him of his cellular phone near his house in Millat Town.
