TOBA TEK SINGH, Dec 25: Nawan Lahore police on Thursday registered a case against all its staff, including the station house officer (SHO), for firing shots at demonstrators and injuring four of them.
Police on Wednesday opened fire at people who were demonstrating against the custodial killing of a youth, Akhtar. However, no policeman had been arrested till Thursday evening.
According to a source, Nawan Lahore SHO Abdul Ghafoor is also an accused in the Akhtar murder case registered by Waan Buchran police, along with 16 other policemen who are in the lockup at Waan Buchran. However, the SHO had not been arrested yet.
Nawan Lahore police had arrested mini truck driver Akhtar and taken him to Mianwali to recover stolen cattle which he was accused of transporting. When police reached Waan Buchran, Akhtar jumped before a truck and was killed.
In a related development, police handed Akhtar’s body to his family about 36 hours after his death. He was buried in the presence of police in his village Chak 245-JB in Jhang.
Demo: Hundreds of farmers took out a rally in Pirmahal on Thursday to protest unavailability of fertilisers.
The protesters burnt tyres at Malkanwala Chowk and blocked traffic for more than one hour on Faisalabad-Multan road. Later, at a meeting at Malkanwala Chowk, they said the government was not heeding to their problem.
They said that unavailability of fertilisers would affect the wheat sowing. They dispersed after district government officials assured them that authorities would be apprised of their problem.
