FAISALABAD, Dec 21: A scene was created at the Chak Jhumra police station when an inspector thrashed his subordinate, no less than the rank of a sub-inspector, black and blue for ‘remaining absent from duty’ without any intimation.
Investigation in-charge Nasrullah Niazi reportedly asked SI Mohammad Ashraf the reason for his absence from the duty. The SI reportedly said that he could not come to the police station because he had to appear before the Lahore High Court on Dec 16 and 17.
The issue led to an exchange of harsh words and inspector Niazi allegedly threatened him with dire consequences and also used foul language.
Eyewitnesses said that SI Ashraf was present in the courtyard of the police station when inspector Niazi came there and started beating him. They said the SI was rescued by other staff.
The injured policeman said his in-charge used foul language and scolded him. The SI alleged that the inspector fell into a rage, thrashed him and ripped to shreds his clothes when he asked him (Niazi) to behave.
The SI further alleged that the in-charge had a grudge against him and he would tease him with different methods.
"Today Niazi tortured me under the pretext of my absence from the duty only to move officers against me for action."
Police higher-ups rushed to the police station when the victim SI submitted his application to them requesting their superiors to reach the ‘scene of crime’ for his help or else he would commit suicide.
Initially, the police banned the entry of reporters to the police station, but it was later lifted on the instructions of senior police officers.
This correspondent saw SI Ashraf with blood-stained torn clothes. His swollen face was enough to reveal that he was severely tortured.
Sources said the injured SI was not issued documents required for the medical examination by officials of his own police station.
Civil Lines DSP Sajjad Khan said: “We will ascertain the facts after listening to both sides”.
Inspector Niazi said he did not beat his subordinate and that the matter would be resolved soon.
No action against any of the police officer was reported till the filing of this story. However, sources said that a probe into the matter had been ordered.
