ISLAMABAD, Dec 19: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman said on Friday she hoped PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif would avoid confrontational politics “at this critical juncture”.

She was talking with reporters at the Parliament House after adjournment of the National Assembly and Senate sessions.

Referring to a pamphlet about the Mariam Nawaz, she said the PPP government “does not indulge in such tactics”.

She said that PML-Q MNA Shehnaz Sheikh had raised the issue and later said that someone had given her a letter to be handed over to PML-N leaders.

“There is no justification for involving the government in this issue. Neither the government nor the PPP indulges in such tactics,” she said.

Ms Rehman said the PPP and PML-N had remained allies and the government wanted to create an environment in which all parties should move forward in consultation with each other and work for the country’s betterment.

She said the government had convened an all-party conference on sensitive issues and consensus had been created on issues of national importance.

She said the government had taken everyone onboard while taking decisions on issues of national importance and the PML-N had supported the government’s stance in the parliamentary committee on national security.

She said the country was passing through a critical phase and facing several problems, including economic issues and regional challenges.

In such a situation, she said, the masses would not like the politics of confrontation.

She said that in India broadcasters had submitted a code of conduct to the information ministry and assured that they would abide by it in emergency situations.

She said that she would appreciate if Pakistani media houses also formulated a code of conduct.

“In the coming few days, I would like to meet (representatives of the) Pakistan Broadcasters Association to … formulate a joint strategy for safeguarding national interests.”

She said that media shaped public opinion and it should come forward and realise its duty. “Political forces had set aside all differences and supported the government on this national issue.”

Referring to the Mumbai terrorist attacks, she said that the Indian government had not yet shared any evidence with Pakistan.—APP
