KARACHI, Dec 16: An additional district and sessions judge on Tuesday sentenced two men to four years in prison for robbery.

Mohammad Kashif and Mohammad Arshad were found guilty of committing the robbery in a jewellery shop in Peerabad police limits in March 2007.

ADJ (west) Manther Ali Jatoi pronounced his verdict after recording the final arguments of defence and prosecution counsel. The court also imposed a fine of Rs20,000 on each convict and in case of default they would serve an additional imprisonment of six months. The court in its judgment observed that the prosecution had produced ample evidence that proved its case beyond any shadow of doubt.

According to the prosecution, the accused had forcefully entered the shop of Mohammad Sadiq alias Mohammad Arshad in Peerabad area on March 20, 2007. They took him at gunpoint and after collecting valuables managed to escape.

Later, the police arrested two suspects for possessing unlicensed weapons and during interrogations they confessed to having committed the robbery in the jeweller’s shop.

A case (FIR 91/07) was registered against the accused under Section 393 and 397/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Peerabad police station on the complaint of Mohammad Sadiq.

The convicts were already in custody and remanded back to the prison to serve their sentence.

Arrest warrants for policemen

Additional District and Sessions Judge (west) Jahangir Ahmed Dayo on Tuesday issued warrants for the arrest of four police officials since they failed to appear in court to give their testimony in a robbery case.

The court had issued a number of notices to ASI Raja Azmat Mahmood, sub-inspectors Bux Jamal, Abdul Rasool and Mohammad Jahanzeb, directing them to appear in court to record their statements in a case registered under Section 397 of the Pakistan Penal Code at Site police station. However, they failed to comply with the court order. The judge directed the police authorities to produce them in court on Dec 30.

The same court also issued the warrants for arrest of eight other policemen since they did not appear in court to record their statements in a street crime case despite repeated notices.

The judge directed the police to arrest sub-inspectors Mohammad Nawaz, Syed Javed Hussain, Aziz Ahmed, Shahab, ASIs Shaukat Hameed, Sarwar, head constable Mohammad Wali and constable Kamran and produce them in court on Jan 2.
