LAHORE, Dec 11: An alleged robber was killed when he was shot at by a jeep rider during a street crime incident on Mohni Road on Wednesday.

Lower Mall police said 28-year-old Shahid alias Tidda of Misri Shah died on the spot after he received a bullet in his head.

Police investigation revealed that Umer Basharat, son of New Anarkali Traders Association Vice-President Haji Basharat, was going on his jeep along with his friend, Sami Iqbal, when two robbers, riding a motorcycle, stopped him at gunpoint and asked him to hand over cash and cell phones.

When one of the robbers snatched cash and cell phones, Umer tried to overpower him. During the course of time, the robber opened fire which was retaliated by Umer with the licenced pistol of his father.

One of the robbers received a bullet and died instantly while his accomplice escaped. Umer remained unhurt despite two bullets fired by the robber died in the incident.

Police reached the spot and shifted the body to the morgue.

The police seized cell phones, wristwatches and a pistol worth Rs135,000 from the deceased.

City Division SP Rana Abdul Jabbar told Dawn that the deceased and his accomplice had committed three street crime incidents in Shafeeqabad, Islampura and Iqbal Town and snatched cash and cell phones from different people the same day.

He said the deceased robber was identified by his cell phone, seized from the spot, on which a call had been made to his brother, a butcher by profession. The SP said Shahid was released from the jail one day before Eidul Fitr after he was charge-sheeted in connection with a robbery case registered with the Ghaziabad police.

“He has served imprisonment twice,” the SP said.

According to a handout, Capital City Police Officer Pervaiz Rathore has announced certificates for Umer and Sami Iqbal for their bravery.

MURDER: A 40-year-old man was found murdered at his makeshift hut at Mehran Block of Iqbal Town on Thursday.

Police said the victim was an addict and had been living in the hut for the last four years. They said the body bore multiple marks of bruises which suggested that the killer(s) had subjected him to severe torture before killing him.
