LAYYAH, Dec 7: The only middle school for girls in Lohaunch Nashaib Union Council of Layyah tehsil has become almost non-functional because of a lack of teaching staff. The school’s boundary wall is damaged and furniture is nonexistent.

Lohaunch Nashaib is the most congested union council of the tehsil and is adjacent to Layyah city. A primary school was set up in Mirani village in 1980s.

The school was upgraded to the middle level in 2006, but no teaching staff has been appointed for 6th, 7th and 8th classes so far. Currently, 70 students are enrolled in 6th and 7th classes. The primary section of the school has three teachers for 250 students.

The school’s boundary wall has partially fallen and the damaged main gate cannot be locked. As the school has no furniture for the staff and students. The school headmistress has arranged three chairs for the staff on her own. The students, however, bring their own sheets to sit on the floor.

Executive District Officer for Education Qazi Qadir Bakhsh said the Education Department was short of staff. He, however, said he would immediately appoint one teacher at the school on an ad hoc basis. More teachers would be appointed at the school after new recruitments, he added.
