KARACHI, Dec 7: Fishermen living in the slums of Shireen Jinnah Colony staged a protest against the Karachi Port Trust authorities’ order to vacate their houses.

They condemned the KPT authorities for harassing the poor fishermen families, and appealed to the government to restrain the Trust’s estate department from evicting them.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Mahigir Tehrik representing fishermen community in Karachi has slammed the KPT authorities for issuing threat of eviction to the fishermen of the colony.

In a statement, the organisation accused the KPT estate department of harassing the fishermen in its bid to force them to withdraw from their old jetty.

It urged the government to intervene in the matter and stop the KPT from depriving the fishermen of their jetty, the only source of their livelihood.

Meanwhile, the Fishermen Cooperative Society (FCS) has assured the fishermen community that the work for the completion of all development and welfare projects approved in the past would be started without any further delay.

Speaking at a gathering of fishermen during his visit to Ibrahim Hyderi, FCS administrator regretted that many of the projects approved by the previous government could not be completed within their stipulated time.—Staff Reporter
