ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: Doctors at the Federal Government Services Hospital (Polyclinic) performed a rare and complicated operation when they removed a 20kg tumor from a woman’s abdomen here on Friday.

The five-hour long operation was carried out by a team of doctors led by Dr Tasawar Mirza. The patient - Ms Mashsooma – from Hatian, Azad Kashmir, was admitted to the FGSH on November 25.

Talking to Dawn, Dr Mirza said: “It was a rare operation in the twin cities’ history as we have removed the tumor attached to the gallbladder”.

The patient was given eight pints of blood during the operation. After the operation, she weighed 46kg.

“The patient is completely out of danger and we are hoping for her full recovery,” the doctor said. Dr Mirza said specimen of the tumor had been sent to laboratory for analysis and if it turns out to be the malignant one, the patient would be put on chemotherapy.

Patient’s husband, Yaqoob, said she was complaining of severe lower abdomen pain and he had no option but to bring her to Islamabad. It is good to see that she is now recovering well, he added.
