Afghanistan policy review nearly complete: Rice
COPENHAGEN: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Friday the Bush administration’s review of its policies in Afghanistan was almost complete.
President George Bush’s administration began reviewing its policies in Afghanistan in September after violence increased. It will also provide an up-to-date strategy for incoming president, Barack Obama, who takes office on Jan 20.
“It’s being reviewed by the principles of the National Security Council and it is going to be discussed with our friends,” said Rice, in Copenhagen as part of a European tour.
“I expect that some elements of it will be made public in some way. We haven’t determined what can and what cannot.”
The Bush administration, the US military’s Joint Staff and the US Central Command under US Army General David Petraeus are all reviewing US policy toward Afghanistan.
“The safe haven across the border (in Pakistan) has become a place where the Taliban has been able to regroup and to operate in ways that they couldn’t just a couple of years ago,” Rice said.—Reuters
