Haroon’s letter requires no action: UN

By Masood Haider

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 4: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has “no specific response” to a recent letter sent by Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon on last week’s terrorist attacks in Mumbai since it did not call for any action from the UN, his spokesperson told reporters on Thursday.

“It is a general letter addressed to the secretary-general and to all member states,” spokesperson Michele Montas said while responding to a question at a briefing.

“No action was required in the letter,” she added.

Ambassador Haroon, in his letter released last week, urged the international community to play its role in averting a conflict in South Asia.

It suggested that the US secretary of state should be dispatched to the region to ease tensions in the subcontinent, a mission that the top American diplomat has now undertaken. The letter also urged India not to widen the area of conflict.

To another question, the spokesperson said that she wasn’t aware of any letter sent by India on the Mumbai attacks.
