PESHAWAR: DSP injured in Peshawar blast

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Dec 4: A deputy superintendent of police was injured when some militants targeted his van by exploding a remote-control bomb here on Thursday morning.

An official of the Chamkani police said DSP Qazi Saeedullah was on the way to Police Lines in a police van when the incident happened on the Chabian Road. The DSP was taken to a local hospital. The vehicle was also damaged.

A source in the bomb disposal squad said the explosive was local made, packed in a plastic bucket and weighed from eight to 10 kilograms, but it did not have ball bearings.

He said the explosion made a seven-foot wide and four-foot deep crater in the road. Police, he said, had found cables, pieces of plastic, etc, but no solid piece of the device could be found in the area.

A case against unidentified terrorists was registered at the Chamkani police station.

WATCHMAN KILLED: A group of bandits killed a watchman and looted 95 tolas of jewellery from a shop in the Sarafa Bazaar here early Thursday morning.

The shop owner, Fazalur Rehman, told Dawn that as he came to the shop in the morning he saw the locks were broken and the entire jewellery and Rs4,000 in cash had been taken away.

Goldsmith Workers Union vice-president Mohammad Rafiq said the bandits had killed the watchman, Taj Mohammad, by strangling him. Dozens of goldsmiths, who had shut their shops in protest and gathered at the site, expressed concern over the lack of security to jewellers and termed the incident failure of police.

They said it was not the first incident and such cases were frequently taking place, but officials concerned were least bothered to take appropriate steps for their protection. They demanded early arrest of the culprits.

HASHISH SEIZED: Officials of the customs intelligence claimed to have seized 410 kilograms of hashish and 22kg opium in two separate operations and arrested one accused here on Thursday.

A spokesman said the officials on a tip-off intercepted a bus on the way from the Khyber Agency to Swat and recovered 60kg hashish from it.
