KARACHI, Dec 3: With a view to ensuring convenience of the public in reaching the Super Highway’s cattle market, the city government has made five alternative routes bypassing the troubled area of Sohrab Goth, City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal told a news conference on Wednesday.

The CDGK has also decided to impose Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code to ban setting up of sacrificial animal markets in the jurisdictions of all the 18 towns of the city to prevent unhygienic conditions, traffic jams and to help save the roadside plantation, he added.

Announcing the measures taken by the CDGK, the nazim said that because of the recent disturbances at Sohrab Goth, there was some pressure on him to allow setting up of cattle markets in the towns. But he did not yield to the pressure, he said, adding that he ensured an unhindered flow of traffic and hygienic conditions, besides protecting saplings planted recently on the medians and roadsides in various parts of the city.

He said though the safety of people visiting Sohrab Goth or any other locality was the prime responsibility of the administration, the CDGK had carved out five alternative routes to the cattle market and the residents of all the 18 towns could now visit the market by taking any of the routes without passing through Sohrab Goth.

Residents of different towns have been advised to take the following routes to reach the Super Highway’s cattle market: 1) People living in Surjani Town, Manghopir and Orangi may go to the Super Highway via the Surjani roundabout, which is called Road 6000; 2) residents of Nazimabad, North Nazimabad and Federal B Area may take the route of Power House, Ajmer Nagri, Saba cinema and then to the Super Highway through Road 4000; 3) those living in Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town may approach the cattle market via Abul Hasan Ispahani Road and Country Garden Road; 4) residents of Gulistan-i-Jauhar and its adjoining areas might take the route of University Road and Met Office for reaching the Super Highway; 5) those living in Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal Colony and Malir will be required to take the route of Safoora Goth via Sharea Faisal to reach the cattle market.

He said proper lighting arrangements had been made on all the five routes, and measures would be taken to ensure safety of people taking these routes.

Offal disposal

Referring to the arrangements made for quick disposal of offal of sacrificial animals during Eid-ul-Azha, the nazim said all town municipal administrations would be lifting offal from their respective jurisdictions. The CDGK would be responsible for lifting offal from all its major thoroughfares and shortly afterwards fumigation would be carried out at all those sites.

He said a number of sites had been selected for dumping/ burying offal to be lifted from all the 18 towns while the CDGK and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board had also made arrangements to wash all those places where animals would be sacrificed on a collective basis.

At the outset, he said, people could lodge their complaints at ‘1339’ about a delay in lifting of offal.
