Over 40 rice mills stop work

Published December 3, 2008

SHIKARPUR, Dec 2: More than 40 rice mills remained closed on Tuesday in response to a strike call given by the Sindh – Balochistan Rice Miller Association. No paddy purchasing took place.

Millers were not ready for purchasing irri-6 at the rate of Rs1,200-1,400 per kg.

District President, Rice Mill Owners Association Shikarpur, Haji Nisar Ahmed Memon had expressed concern over the attitude of Passco in delaying the purchase of paddy as committed with the representatives of growers and millers.

He claimed that thousands of growers were unable to meet their domestic needs and hundreds of mill employees and daily wagers deprived of earning their livelihood after the closure of mills and cessation in paddy purchase.

DEMO: Members of the Organising Committee of Pakistan Medical Association Shikarpur district staged a demonstration outside the press club on Tuesday against police behaviour with doctors and patients at Ahmed Medical Centre Shikarpur.
