Multan’s top wrestler dies at 85

MULTAN, Dec 2: Zamman Khan Pehlwan, a known wrestler, died here on Tuesday at the age of 85.

He was admitted to Nishtar Hospital two days ago after an artery in his brain ruptured. He died on Tuesday morning and was laid to rest at a local graveyard.

The veteran wrestler, a recipient of the Sitara-i-Pakistan, had the honour of defeating Goga Pehlwan, a progeny of Bholu Pehlwan. He had played a draw with Akki Pehlwan and Azam Pehlwan.

“The wrestling wizard was perhaps the last living soul from among the senior-most wrestlers of the country, who were adept in old and traditional wrestling,” said Punjab Wrestling Association Vice-President Qamar Abbas, better known as Bhola Pehlwan.

He said Zamman died before he could watch his son Hamid Khan, another promising wrestler, contest the final of the Rustam-i-Pakistan competition against Bashir Bhola Bhala.—APP
