PML-N assures govt of full support
By Iftikhar A. Khan
ISLAMABAD, Dec 1: The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has assured the government of its unconditional support in dealing with Indian allegations about Pakistan’s involvement in last week’s Mumbai attacks.
“This is a national issue and we will extend full support to the government, setting all political differences aside,” Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali said at a press conference after meeting Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Monday. The PML-N delegation included Ahsan Iqbal and Sardar Mehtab Abbasi.
Chaudhry Nisar said that a loud and clear message should go to the other side of the border that the people and government of Pakistan wanted peace in the region.
He stressed the need for understanding the dynamics of the situation and said it was not merely a matter of terror attacks in Mumbai; tension between two nuclear-armed states could put the future of the region at stake.
He said that the PML-N would attend a conference on national security convened by the prime minister to evolve a national strategy for handling the situation.
He said Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and he himself would represent the party at the conference.
He regretted that India started levelling allegations against Pakistan while shots were still being fired and nobody had been arrested in Mumbai.
Responding to an Indian journalist’s question, the PML-N leader said that it was his party which had started a peace process with India.
Chaudhry Nisar said his party would always stand by the government on all issues of national importance.
The PML-N delegation discussed with the prime minister matters relating to national security in the wake of Indian allegations and threats.
Mr Gilani informed the delegation about his interaction with heads of several political parties and world leaders.
He said leaders of all political parties had offered unconditional support to the government on the issue.
The prime minister said his discussions with world leaders were fruitful and they extended full diplomatic support to Pakistan.
